Awesome game with some server issues. I haven't found the server issues to be that bad though.

The early game is so annoying that I genuinely couldn't bring myself to play any more of it. The late game looks cool, but I'm not going to sit here fighting with crap tools and a crap inventory system to get there.

This game was on my wishlist for a long time and I was so disappointed by it when I finally got my hands on it. It's repetitive, limited, and doesn't have any real progression. There's no real campaign mode, the money doesn't matter, and you'll spend the vast majority of your time just laying brick after brick in another boring house that's almost identical to the last. There are so many mechanics that could have made this interesting, such as plumbing or electricity, or if they had a proper campaign mode so I could build up a construction empire. Instead, you have an incredibly annoying robot that talks too slowly, can't be skipped, tells cringily bad jokes, and annoys the hell out of you the entire time. I might revisit this game if they do some major reworking and add a lot of depth (and ideally do something to remove a lot of the grind of placing thousands of individual bricks), but I've refunded it for now.

Sniper Elite 5 would be a fantastic game if Sniper Elite 4 didn't exist. I played through the entire campaign of Sniper Elite 4 last week (without knowing this was coming out) and it's an incredible game. Everything in this game is *good*, but most of it feels like a downgrade from Sniper Elite 4. For example:
  • the difficulty system is fine, but coming from the highly granular difficulty settings of 4 is a real let down. I miss having a dozen sliders with the ability to customise every part of the difficulty rather than just choosing easy, medium or hard for a couple overall attributes (There are like 3 sliders instead of like 12). This has lots of gameplay impacts that make the game less satisfying than it was in 4.
  • the maps are fine, but the maps of 4 feel so much more open. I would regularly get kills of 100m-300m in 4, but those are few and far between in 5. My most used weapon in some maps is my pistol because so much of the map is close range and using a rifle is just impractical.
  • the sniping is fine, but it's just not as satisfying as 4. The kill cams are not as good, and you cannot toggle the aim assist without changing the overall sniping difficulty, which makes it feel like you're forced to play with training wheels the whole time unless you want to play on the hardest modes. This plus the shorter distances the maps let you snipe from and the whole thing is just fine.
  • the weapon progression is fine, but it lacks the sense of accomplishment that 4 had. In Sniper Elite 4, you upgrade guns by performing certain challenges. For example, you unlock an upgrade for one of the rifles by getting 50 liver shot kills. It's difficult, frustrating, and requires a lot of play time to get, but it makes you a better sniper and it makes the unlock so much more rewarding. In Sniper Elite 5, you primarily unlock upgrades by finding workbenches in the levels. No real challenge or difficulty. Just look for the resistance fighter symbol to be painted on a building and find a way in. This isn't bad, and it would work well to compliment the challenge system. It is, however, not a replacement for that system, and it just feels cheaper.
There are some areas where the game is better. For example, I really like the new weapon customisation. This is makes preparing for maps a lot more interesting by forcing you to not just consider which gun but also things like what ranges you will be working at. The map design, however, really kneecaps this. While the guns have many stats that you can adjust for, you rarely adjust anything beyond balancing the most damage you can get with the best accuracy you can get. There are rarely meaningful tradeoffs, and the maps don't really compel you to play in different ways, so you'll likely find a preferred weapon and just use that.

All of this makes rating this game really difficult. This is not a bad game, it just isn't as good as the last one in the series. If I had never played Sniper Elite 4, I think I would probably really enjoy this game. I have, however, played Sniper Elite 4, and the juxtaposition is simply not in 5's favour. My advice is to play Sniper Elite 4 first and wait for this to be on sale for below launch price. If you've played 4 already and really want more content, this is fine and you probably won't dislike it, but it will just feel a bit hollow.

I wish there was a "meh" option for the review instead of having to recommend or not. The DLC is fine. It was fun to play in some new areas, but the issue is that so many of those areas feel exactly the same. I've played all of the hives and do not remember a single distinct thing about them; in my memory it's all just a blur of generic cave maze.

What I wish I could have seen here was more variety. The issue isn't just that there are only so many levels and people got tired of them; it's that so many of feel the same. I've got 120 hours in the game and I'd have a hard time describing certain maps to you because they all just blend together.

I preordered the deluxe edition, so I got the season pass before playing anything and didn't have to decide whether to purchase this DLC on it's own for $15. I personally probably would have, but that's because I've gotten a lot of time out of this game and an excuse to squeeze more out is great. If you already like the game and have, or will have, a lot of time in it, you'll probably be content with this DLC. If you only played a few hours of the base game or don't see yourself hitting triple digits in playtime, you might want to hold off until a sale (if you buy at all).

After about 50 hours in the open beta and 40 in the final release, I feel comfortable saying it's a pretty good game.

Jokes aside, there are some valid criticisms to be made. The easiest difficulty is incredibly easy, and the next is significantly harder. This difficulty curve really feels like it punishes individual players who don't have a group of friends to play with. It's a very team-oriented game, and to call playing with randoms oonline"hit or miss" is being generous.

On the topic of the team gameplay, the recruit difficulty does very little to prepare you for just how team-oriented the game is. If you play this like you would play Left 4 Dead, where all the characters are interchangeable and you don't need to worry too much about weapon types or skills each player uses, you can beat recruit fairly easily, but you will never beat the other modes. However, since many people will begin on recruit and see these strategies work, it won't be apparent just how important player specialisation is. It can give players who start there a false sense of how they should play the game and set them up for frustration later.

Finally, one of my biggest complaints is the continue system. It is unnecessarily punishing without contributing virtually anything to the fun of the game. I can recognise that some players may value the challenge, but forcing us to replay multiple levels because of some bad RNG feels like bad design, especially on recruit & veteran. I would disable it if I could, and hope that a future patch will make this an option.

Besides these points, however, I find the game incredibly fun with a high degree of replayability. There are definitely some things I could suggest to improve it, but, overall, I think it's a very solid experience.

Advice for new players:
- Start on recruit. Some people will say it's bad, too easy, or less fun, but in the later acts it can still be a challenge. Plus it's a great way to unlock some cards before trying the harder difficulty.

- Decks matter, and the order of the decks matter. You draw the cards in order every time, so space them out accordingly. You can see ahead of time what missions you'll have and, assuming 1 card per mission, you can tell when you'll draw a certain card. Use this to your advantage to get the cards you need right when you need them.

- Team specialisation is incredibly important. I don't just mean a bit of difference; I mean complete separation of roles. There are 4 types of weapon, and your team should have one of each. Whichever you are using, go all-in. A jack-of-all-trades build sounds good on paper, but you will pay for it in harder difficulties.

- Play to your team's strengths. There are already a lot of people claiming expertise or saying there is a certain way you have to play, but that's entirely wrong. You can customise to your heart's content, and just because something works for them doesn't mean it will work for you. Using their strats or decks can be a good starting point, and may even work well, but you should not believe anyone presenting them as the "best" or the only "correct" build. Tweak it until it works for *you.*

Most importantly though:
- Have fun. It's just a game. Don't grind too hard or take it too seriously. The progression is the point, and having fewer things unlocked just gives you things to look forward to. You aren't worse for it, and everyone's been where you are, so don't stress and enjoy the game.

The gun play and customisation is wonderful, and the majority of the gameplay loop is good, I just wish they would work on PvE more. There's only a couple of missions I've seen for PvE (collect item or kill everyone missions), which would be cool if the AI was better. It's still fun, which is why I'm leaving a positive review, but it definitely lacks a lot of the polish I would hope for.

If you want a PvP experience, this would probably be a fantastic game. If you are more into PvE like I am, it really feels let down by the AI.

So I've really, really enjoyed this game so far. For an early access game I'd never heard of, there a lot more there than I anticipated. It is still early access, and there's definitely improvements to be made, but I definitely recommend giving it a try. At the very least, it'll put it in your library so that, when there is more content, you can come back. I'm gonna play the hell out of it for the next few days with some friends, and am genuinely excited to see where it goes. Maybe it's because I've been burned on other Early Access games, but this one has me very impressed.

I'm like super not into this type of game, but it's actually crazy fun. Sure there are bugs, but they're actively working on stuff. I just wish there were more animal varieties. Other than that though it's easily one of the most surprising hits in my library. Very happy with the purchase.

Update:
I wrote the initial review at 22 hours. Now I've got over 60 hours and I have to say this game really surprises me still. It's such a chill, easy game to play. I don't play it often, but when I do, my friends and I will spend hours just hanging out in-game. The gameplay is fun enough that it makes an excellent time-sink, but laid back enough that we can still talk and mess around while we play.

The part that's most surprising is that *I* enjoy it. I can't stress enough how not into this type of game I generally am. If you're on the fence or don't think you'll enjoy it — please give it a try. As long as you have a couple of friends with you, it's really hard to beat.

I only have a couple of problems with it:
- My request for more animals, and more *types* of animals, per map still stand. Their latest maps seem to have more variety (I think, though I haven't checked).
- I wish the animal AI was better. The animals have schedules that they follow too closely. We can often camp the same position for a long time without the animal catching on that it's a death trap.
