I'm very new to this genre of games, my only experiance of something similar being Dauntless (a f2p simpler version of mhw in a sense). Being new, there's a lot of things that the game doesn't really explain, especially certain items and mechanics in the game that was present in previous games of the franchise. There is simply an overload of mechanics in this game that makes it hard to teach every single one to newer players, and I found that it took me until end-game to even get a hang of half of it.

Essentially in the game you hunt monsters inorder to carve their corpse to gain materials to craft and upgrade your gear. In that sense, your character doesn't actually get stronger; you rely on the gear that you crafted (and skills you gained along the way) to fight increasingly stronger monsters.

Although the game gives the feel of an ARPG, it is less of a hack-and-slash game and more of a skill-based hunting sim. You track a monster and follow the clues until you find it, in which you can use a varity of tactics of engage and finish the monster, be it preventing it's escape with a well-laid trap, or following it to it's hideout and waiting for it to sleep before placing bombs around it to wake it up with a massive explosion. Hunting monsters is very much a niche genre, and not everyone will enjoy the gameplay experiance as it does get grindy at certain parts of the game. The biggest problem people encounter playing this game is struggling to find things to do besides completing collections or attempting speedruns once they reach end-game. Luckily mhw annuonced that they are releasing a new monster (Lunestra), extending the Kulve Taroth event siege, and introducing DMC crossover event in this month, so there are plenty of things to do in the meantime. Overall, if you're unsure of whether or not to buy this game, try out Dauntless first to get a feel of the hunting genre. Be prepared for endgame grind, but hopefully you'll have fun along the way.
