Its a bit rough around the edges, but nothing a few mods can't polish off. As of writing I'm still waiting on Immortal empires but other than that I'm plenty pleased with my purchase.

Its the best parts of Fallen enchantress (And admittedly likely a plethora of other games that have the same mechanics that I'm not aware of.) together with Civ Beyond Earth, and still manages to improve on them.

In short I can definitely recommend it.

Early Access Review
I played Risk of Rain 1 and I was a bit dubious about the jump to 3d, but man was I proven wrong. The game is just absolutely amazing even in early access. Definitely recommended!

While I did enjoy the game, (short as the experience may have been).
I did get annoyed by the lack of options, no windowed mode, can't change volume of the incredibly repetitive background music, etc.

Another problem was the fact that I managed to unwittingly stumble across and solve the last puzzle, making my actual playthrough of the game about 3 minutes. Naturally I did play through the game in its entirety still and even without that odd little shortcut I still found the game to be short, the worst thing was that it barely even answered the questions it threw up during said time, I.E. what was that weird ghost lady appearing in the hallway all about.

In short I'm not impressed.

Gameplay

You know, I would have loved this game if the developers weren't so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ convinced that anyone gives more than two ♥♥♥♥♥ about the bloody 3d sonic games.

The 2d sections are a wonderful throwback to the original games and even the 2d sections of the new 3d games are quite enjoyable. But the 3d portions are littered with small platforms, unresponsive controls. Badly integrated gimmicks and quite frankly gameplay that would make sonic '06 look good.

I haven't touched on the Bossbattles yet, In my oppinion the boss battles are the only time the 3d parts actually serve a purpose. Like with the rest of the game the developers pushed the gimmick of having half 2d and half 3d in the boss battles as well but since some if not most of the bossbattles are slower pased you can actually see where you are going and controll the character.

Sadly half of a decent game does not a good game make. I couldn't force myself to finish the game. Unless you really enjoy the 3d sonic games. And if you do bless you for you have a much higher tolerance for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ than I have. I'd say pick up the game because its really clear that the developers tried to push that the most. For anyone else I'd suggest that you veer away from this game.

A small note on the DLC

From what the dlc offers its quite clear that we don't have to look here for any improvement of the original game either. The Dlc merely offers some new gimmicks and not the throwbacks to some nostalgia that the package teases us with.

Conclusions

All in all I'd say that the franchise is running kind of stale. Where Super Mario 64 managed to embrace 3d and pull out something worth looking at. Sonic never made the transition all that smoothly, You just can't have a 3d platformer and keep the sense of speed that you want in a sonic game.
