Play this game with the FAR Mod. It allows 144 FPS and easy installation of mods such as HD Textures (highly recommend) and better KB&M controls.

Story
Fantastic, and only gets better the more you keep on playing. The layered themes building on one another, strong main and side characters with interesting development of their front and backstories. The sidequests are generally pretty strong, NPCs almost always have something of note to say, and don't feel like generic models put in to populate a scene.

The pacing can be slow at times, such as the first half of Ending B, but does pick up towards the tail end of it. The game has 5 "Endings", but its best if you treat it as one continuous playthrough and obtain all 5 to fully engage in the story. I can not overstate how much I enjoyed the story and its themes.

Gameplay
3 types of combat: Shoot em up sections, hacking game, and combat that I will cover below. Most of the gameplay is the combat, but there are general sidequests that act as little minigames in their own right, along with an interesting system to modulate your stats, abilities, etc.

General Combat: Fun for the most part, however your attacks don't have a nice weighty feeling to them, particularly when you are fighting any large enemies. There are some abilities (Hammer, Beam, etc.) that feel great when they land, but they are relegated to a short cooldown. The dash evasion is fairly generous, and combat usually isn't anything that difficult you can't overcome.

Hacking Game: Worst part of the game. It halts the flow of combat when you do use it mid fight (granted you don't have to use it), and otherwise feels like it serves to pad out gameplay. It isn't hard by any means, but I can't say I had a fun time doing any of the games. With one exception being the final ending, that part was unique and pretty fun due to the circumstances. With all that said, the time spent being required to play the hacking games are few and far between.

Shoot Em Ups: Pretty enjoyable, despite it being similar to the hacking game in theory. But the diversity of attacks, changing sceneries, and unique fights make it all more enjoyable than the hacking minigame.

Music
Very good, more atmospheric than melodic unlike other RPGs, but the parts that are a bit more melodic are interspersed at key moments to really drive home certain themes, emotions, so on.

Artstyle and Graphics
Played almost exclusively with HD Textures after about 2 hours in, it really does make the game look much better, particularly affecting the background environments and objects more, recommend than the already pretty detailed main characters, enemies, but even they get a little graphical boost. Scenery is very pretty to look at with a large variety of environments to see.

Remarks
Yoko Taro is constantly showcasing the games themes/messages through its art, story, and gameplay, and what it reveals is something truly worth experiencing. If you appreciate good games/media, you will have a great time playing.

I had a nice little base, finished putting up a tavern with some chairs, tables, and a place for alcohol. However I made a fatal mistake of having more than 1 chair to 1 table. This caused an argument amongst two dwarves who were arguing over who the table was for, with one throwing his mug at the other dwarf, only for it to miss, striking an innocent dwarf in the head. This ensued with a brawl in the tavern, leading to a little over half of my dwarf population dead from the carnage. I love this game

I have no nostalgic attachment to this game, nor did I know anything going into this game unlike other titles, so everything in this review is going to be of that perspective.

The story is nothing to write home about, not bad but not a lot of strong points to remember unlike other FF titles. The characters for the most part are really lackluster however. Ashe is probably the only standout character in terms of development, while being a key driving force in the story. Vaan gets a lot of criticism because of being essentially a MC insert, but it's kind of nice that the "MC" is not the driving force of the story. Balthier is only slightly better than the rest of the cast, but the rest are pretty much non-existent in the story. For all this ♥♥♥♥ I talk about the characters, they are atleast memorable and not bland JRPG inserts. The voice acting is a major step up from FFX, and the characters have unique ways of talking that makes them standout from each other.

The combat is vastly different compared to older titles, you essentially set a list of commands that your party members can do if certain conditions are reached (Example: Ally goes below 50% health, cast Cure). These battles are much more based on going into the fight prepared and adapting on the fly to things that may happen. You can manually control what your characters do without needing to interact with this system, but you are really hindering yourself by doing this, and really missing out on what makes this system fun. Once you sink your teeth in this gameplay system, it becomes really rewarding, adding on to the really well done Job System that actually makes your playthrough really unique compared to other people. Maybe you make Fran an archer with her second class being a bushi, or maybe a time battlemage combined with a machinist. There are 12 unique classes, and being able to make any character a combination of 2 classes really adds a lot to the feedback loop of leveling up, putting points into each characters skill tree, getting better gear, doing the more difficult hunts all masterfully work together. This is one of the highlights of FFXII. The second would be its world.

The world really does feel like it's constantly changing with how the npcs talk and interact, talking about things that the party has done but from common city folk perspective is really nice. The side characters of side quests even seem to have a place in the world, and are not just quest vendors that give loot. The amount of secrets to explore when it comes to unlocking shortcuts, areas, finding boss arenas, it honestly was just a blast to explore the world. Depending on the time spent, some of the zones will change areas with weather patterns, allowing new monsters, quests, or hunts to be available.

However, some of the endgame content is less so difficult because it's difficult, but because of the amount of time spent and RNG dealt with when trying to acquire rare items or fighting bosses. The game does start to become less enjoyable when you try to fight the super hard endgame stuff like Yiazmat, Zodiark, among some other grinds to get the best gear in the game. I wish I had done the last dungeon at an appropriate level because I was so strong that it was very trivial. If you do the hunts at the appropriate levels, it will be much more enjoyable.

This is probably the longest I've spent playing a FF game, but that is partially due to the sheer amount of side quest content, and how long a lot of the endgame bosses take to defeat. Don't let my time played fool you, the VAST majority of my playtime was done in x4 speed. Keep in mind I also 100% this game, but even with that in consideration the time to 100% is much longer than other FF titles I have played. Without the x4 speed, I probably would have clocked in 120+ hours. Though I will say this game is much more laid back and relaxing when it comes to general combat and gameplay, unlike other FF titles.

In spite of what this game doesn't do well, its highlights really do shine in a unique way when compared to the best FF titles. I highly recommend this game to everyone, although be wary of trying to 100% this game. I enjoyed it, but I am not sure if I would do it again.

The best Final Fantasy game to this day. The characters (even the side ones) are the most endearing, and likeable, this series has seen. The characters talk to each other like real people, speaking of dreams, aspirations, problems, jokes, and are of help to each other. They give space when needed, and all act like people making it through the world rather than RPG standins. These all tie in with the central themes of FF9 masterfully, showing contrast amongst many characters of how they all deal with similar situations. Despite its more cartoonish exterior, the themes and story is much more mature and well thought out than the other games.

The battle system, while not being the best feature of the game, still is very solid and fun, with there being very little to complain about for it. The only complaints that I have would be the Trance system, while cool in concept, is frustrating because how little it impacts the gameplay unlike the Limit Breaks in FF7.

The music is what you can come to expect from Final Fantasy's Nobuo Uematsu, which is amazing. The character themes in particular are standout performances.

The only gripe I have with the game is the minigame that was decided, being Tetra Master. If you played FF8, it is a worse version of Triple Triad. If you have not played FF8, it is a card game in which you capture the opponents cards using your cards. But the cards themselves are RNG. A card with higher stats can just flatout lose to a card with lower stats, even if they are the exact same card. But this game is mostly optional, with it having very little requirement for the game to be finished.

Once you sink your teeth into the game, you will realize that this is the best FF game. It has the best story and realized characters, the most well-rounded battle system and supporting features, and a memorable score to come along with it. Only the minigame is a scuff on the mark of the game, but the lack of faults is emblematic of a good game. (When you do play this game, use the graphic enhancing Moguri Mod. High resolution HD backgrounds that are more detailed and have a higher resolution, bug fixes, 30fps FMVs, and some QOL features.)

250+ games played with new netcode, I can do matches from SoCal to Japan with very few hiccups on a 3 frame delay, which is 100% playable, even in this game with tight and harder to do combos. East to West Coast USA sometimes doesn't even need 1 frame of delay. Turn off Vsync, play with a wired connection, and buy the game

Have roughly 2000 games played now, still amazing and the devs continued to make the online lobbies, replays, training mode even better. Buy BBCF when it gets rollback

It's Halo on the PC, there isn't much more that needs to be said. Whether being played competitively or casually, it is hard to for another game to come close to the amount of raw fun that these games produce. Every aspect from the multiplayer, splitscreen, singleplayer, soon to be added forge and theater mode, provide hours upon hours of endless, polished, and most importantly, fun content.

There are a few downsides, this being the first actual port of Halo to the PC since Halo 2, so there are a few launch day bugs and annoyances. Some people have had audio issues, the UI is not the greatest in the world, the default keybinds are a bit janky, and not being able to set multiple keys to a single action is a bit weird. But in the face of what this game get's right, these are very minor annoyances that are quickly overlooked.

The way this game is able to connect people and friends so seamlessly is still mind-boggling. Halo Reach and 3 specifically can go toe-to-toe with modern multiplayer games in terms of features and capabilities, and even then it's not much of a competition most of the time. Some of my fondest moments have been me with my friends playing the forge mode creating the craziest thing we could think of while dropping tanks on each other. I've laughed until my mouth has hurt, and mode a few life-long friends from being invited to custom games. This game is timeless classic that is worth every dollar spent. 10/10
