This game has flow and style and I'll be damned if I didn't want more.

Only got trapped in the level a handful of times and a few of the underground regions were too easy to get lost in, which was a bad thing because I had fun shooting everything and ran out of enemies.

Achievement hunts is rarely so fun when every mission is a freaking delight to redo in another gear or another loadout

I didn't have a console for the Infamous 1 and 2 and got on prototype late but this is that exact sweet spot of semi openworld souls light gameplay.

Were DX11 and unreal not playing nice, I'd have more thoughts, but the fact of the matter is that I am trying to keep playing because I'm having so much flipping fun.

Sebo needs balance

Early game I am flopping like a magicarp.

But its so fun to just jump about and smash about. I'm not fighting the gameplay or the controls, I'm fighting the engine and the enemies.

My first thought of reviewing this game was to call it a 5 out of 10, then I realized I spent 200+ hours playing it.

The flow of improvement is fun and limited only by your own creativity. The grind is only made harsh by your ability to expand and extra.

If I had a complaint, it would be that the help data is lacking in certain areas and that several help files were blank.

But I put 200 hours into this and have had fun.

Given as a gift.

This is the third afro fantasy/afro futurism game I've played this year and I'm very happy with what i've gotten.

Less metroidvania and more flashback. Fun either way.

Lets break down how I feel on the various bits.

Visuals: Zau doesn't stand out enough from the background and while this doesn't hurt gameplay, it is annoying.

combat: A definate Git Gud type system. Basically, fight smart, don't spam, don't tank. Getting into the flow by the third mission is divine.

Music:Banging, gets the job done.
Story: Zau and DEATH are interesting to watch interact as the story goes on. DEATH learning more from Zau about people and Zau being forced to grow up. I have yet to find any of them annoying compared to "HEY! LISTEN"

Boss Battles: I haven't hit the third one, but so far, the two bosses I have faced so far have made me remember my feelings during the pretty parts of Disney golden age and the scary parts that gave you nightmares. Really hit the feels

But if there's one thing you really should know that takes this game to another level, its that it does everything you would have wanted in a game set in Wakanda and reminds you how badly the house of mouse has failed to capitalize on a chance to create a real S tier game ip to rival the batman and spiderman games.

All in all, Zau does enough things right to make me feel good. Anything its done wrong, does little to undercut the overall experience.

I have to say that this game holds up in a lot of ways in the 20 years since I first downloaded the demo along with gamespy.

The moment to moment texture and flavor of each fight runs good.

There are critiques to be made about various weapons falling off in the late game, and the final mission really fails to build upon the game's strengths, but.....Renegade as a whole has a worldspace sense that pulls you in and makes you want to hit every objective and every corner.

I'm left wanting more.

Additionally, the writing and humor from something in the early 2000s era actually holds up and doesn't come off as cringe. Even when Havok is boasting, you're still on board for it.

All together, a fine example of game design and world building missing in todays world.

I enjoy this game and getting lost in the process.

Pro
Terraria with a more thriving village a somewhat more robust combat system.
More goal oriented exploration.

Con's
UI lacking in certain areas, made it hard to realize I had options
early tutorial makes learning hard. Took several restarts to field what I actually know
Mid game, information overload, hard to know why the flying fox your civilization is becoming unstable...

Dunno what the endgame is, haven't really utilized current management systems so I'm looking forward to those being streamlined.

But overall, its still fun. While the game needs more time in the oven, those moments when your development comes together and you fend off an invasion with a pincher maneuver, it feels divine.

You know how you like building/managing cities and then you peak and its just busy work until you win?

What if you never peaked?

What if you had to work against the clock, failure behind every choice. Never knowing if the next tree to fall heralds your settlement's salvation or destruction?

Because mechanically, that is what this game is trying to be.

Every season between the storm is another run, another chance to stab out into the wilds and carve a future. Breaking your settlement's off at a state of failure or success forces you into making bolder decisions and thinking about streamlining your choices rather than brute forcing everything. Hell, sometimes I let problems come my way so that i was better off in the long run.

I am legit uninstalling after each run because its so damn good that you want to charge back out there after the sunrise and have another go at it.

It honestly feels like what a Stargate Atlantis sim would be without any heroes. Grab some armor piercing rounds and kill the giant mole we just found.

The world building was top notch and the combat system, while complicated, boiled down to spinning plates and spamming attacks. Fun but it had its dull spots. Once you peak and had gear to match your chosen Aurion/legacy/pillar/elemental fighting style, you were a steam engine that needed fuel and protection.

Chasing some of the achievements made combat more interesting as forcing bosses to unleash their legacy before me forced me to really reach for the gold ring and synchronize with Erine. ------ became a thing later and wow did that open things up.

But that was the problem, the end game boss which i loved narratively, was a disppointment mechanically. But maybe I was just that good?

Which is kind of fitting....?

Really, my criticisms are that this game's issues were from a small studio making their first game of this scope. I loved the story and am suffering withdrawal symptoms. There were no third act betrayals, all the characters were consistent and you knew these conflicts were coming (although I am unsure about the tragic backstory reveals, maybe more foreshadowing needed).

I guess Japanese rpg jank conditioned me to expect a exhausting mechanical ending instead of an exhausting narrative ending.

Biggest complaint, poor narrative flow.

Biggest praise, thicc captain's daughter being a recurring thorn in the side of Enzo and Erine's marriage.

Real authentic praise, showing several types of relationships, and their growth/rot

The king and queen of zama
The marriages in isao
Enzo's various bromances
Various women being forced to compete with each other by their cultures and their families


Minor nitpick, lotta great amazonian, front line combat, warrior queens. But also pragmatic queens. Plus several women being....presenting sexual energy passion but not being presented as perverted (there was one dude whose legacy/ninjutsu was perversion) but maybe they could have fit a few thief archetypes in there, or some queer stories. But that is minor because this was such a thick narrative, it sagged in places under its own weight.
