You know the funnest part of city builders? The first 0.5-1 hours where you're fighting against scarcity and trying to reach an equilibrium right? Against the Storm is ONLY that part and that makes it incredibly compelling.

The problem so many city sims run into is that the endgame isn't compelling and the micro gets too out of hand once your city gets sufficiently big. ATS works around this by setting the game up as a roguelike and building its systems around solely that first 1 hour of gameplay and it's incredibly addictive for it.

New buildings and mechanics are drip fed at a very satisfying rate and the game does an excellent job at easing you into its systems and teaching you the main gameplay loop which is: ADAPT. You don't always get the same building combinations and you will inevitably be locked out of some key production trees by your choices, don't feel frustrated because this is by design.

Instead, take into account your map's environment. Choose buildings and make decisions in a goal to optimize at being incredibly good at producing a subsection of items that fulfill certain categories. Your decisions should be guided by what resources the map gives you, have plenty of fertile lands? You're going to get tons of wheat, go for buildings that use wheat and optimize towards a flour mill so you can use a baker to get luxury food, choose a brewery if you see it so you can make ale because lastly you're going to want to choose a tavern to fulfill leisure for your pops.

If you like city sims of any kind, I highly urge you give ATS a shot, it won't disappoint. Its easily the best one I've ever played in over 15 years.

Despite a rocky start, TW WH 3 is the game we were promised by CA almost a decade ago. The Smash Bros Ultimate of warhammer fantasy, damn near everyone is here barring Nippon and Araby which were both long-shots to begin with.

Immortal Empires is in a good albeit unbalanced state given that they now have dozens of races and even more Legendary Lords to balance, but for Player vs AI you can't go wrong with pretty much anyone. Given the new DLC policy where you can get past DLC races and LLs without owning the base game, there's no reason to wait to jump in. I've got half a thousand hours across the 3 games and I anticipate hitting 1k no problem.

Fantastic cerebral dialogue and a great distillation of all the great things about contemporary CRPGs. A modern day Planescape.

Faster-Paced TW with a simpler campaign, take that for what you will.
