10 years later and it is still one of the best FPS games I have ever played. I am still hooked by it in 2019 so it is quite a great purchase!

8-bit Review (Reviews in 150 words or less)

This game is good when you are bored as hell or if you are angry at someone else. Just imagine them as the cute character you are playing and EXPLODE IT INTO BITS! Watch and laugh as you force it to commit suicide, get taken by the grim reaper, or get slashed by those meat-grinder thingies. Then, pat yourself on the back as you finally legally murdered that a-hole you have a beef with. And oh, it also has a soothing music. So, this game is good. Quite repetitive but good, nonetheless.

1000 years from now, archeologists would dig out this game and conclude that the people of 2000 AD imagined themselves as a loaf of bread for entertainment.

Rev-up your dune busters and prepare for a ride as we explore the post-apocalyptic dystopia of Rage! Released in 2011, the game follows the story of a man known only as the “Ark Survivor” or the “Man from the Past”. Waking up after a long cryo-sleep, the Ark Survivor finds himself on a barren wasteland left by an apocalyptic asteroid impact that annihilated almost all life on Earth. The few humans that survived formed clans and the goal of our protagonist is to earn their trust as he evades the threat of mutants as well as the Authority that relentlessly hunts his kind. Being a game developed by id Software, the developer Doom and Wolfenstein, and published by Bethesda Softworks, the company behind the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series,it is only expected that Rage is surely a massive hit, right? Ehh… Let’s get to the review.

GRAPHICS
Rage’s graphics are acceptable at best. The environment was quite good, the animations are really sick especially during vehicle scenes and when your character receives a new weapon, and the level of gore would really make the sadist in you happy. However, there are some areas where things around you seem flat. They look like cardboard cutouts and that kind takes away the experience. On top of that, when you look around, you can see the environment render before your eyes which is quite annoying. This could have been solved with the magic of motion blur but after tweaking the game’s settings, it is still there. (Grade: 71%)

AUDIO
I believe it is in audio where Rage truly excelled. Intense battle music (both on foot and vehicle battles), eerie and dreadful ambient music while exploring places overrun by mutants, and brilliant voice acting for NPCs, what more could you ask for a game’s audio? Of course, I have run into some problems like bandits talking like Authority soldiers in the Blue Line Station and some audio clips not looping well in the first mission but those are just minor setbacks. Audio is still a win! (Grade: 93%)

GAMEPLAY
In the world of Rage, you will have variety of things to do. Aside from your main story missions, you have secondary, optional missions which you can activate by talking to NPCs and looking at the Job Board. Moreover, there are tons of mini games around the town if you want to earn quick in-game cash. There are also several races wherein winning earns you racing certificates which you can spend for car upgrades. However, issues arise when it comes to scavenging and stealth which the game constantly reminds you of. There is really not much to explore and scavenge in the wastelands aside from few plants here and there. Resources can easily be taken from dead enemies or be bought from the store. You don’t even have to worry about money because there are quite a lot of ways to earn them. So much for “survival in the wasteland.”As for the stealth, it really bugs me that the game constantly tells you to be stealthy yet when you kill an enemy, even with the silent crossbow or wingstick, the whole area gets alerted and you end up guns blazing. Towards the latter part of the game, the stealth mechanic is almost nonexistent, so why bother reminding us to go stealthy at all? (Grade: 84%)

STORY
I think the weakest area of Rage is the story-telling. The main missions are just a bunch of “fetch” quests and adds nothing to the story or lore of the game. There is not much character build-up for the protagonist or some sort of backstory for the clans, towns and settings, and main NPCs. People just tell you what to do and you are just there to follow them. And then after hours of hours of grinding your character, the game just abruptly ends – no final bosses, no twists – it just ends. You just get thrown back to the last town you were in and you can’t even see any changes in the environment like everything you did in the final mission did not matter at all. (Grade: 20%)

REPLAYABILITY
Just like what I said, after the main story, you get thrown back to the last town you were in so if you have races or side missions you forgot to complete, you can go ahead and complete them. Also, if you’re a gamer who likes replaying a game in higher difficulties, you can do so. However, after some time replaying through all the missions and fighting the same types of enemies, things get a little bit boring. Don’t even bother trying out multiplayer because it’s absolutely dead (at least in my area). (Grade: 40%)

FINALS
Despite the poor story-telling, I did enjoy exploring the world of Rage. I definitely had fun driving around the wasteland, hunting down other cars. However, when I finished the game, I felt like the immersion was not complete. I end up asking a lot of questions rather than getting satisfied for beating the game. This game needs a sequel not because it’s an outstanding game but because we need answers for all our questions and we need to get satisfied with the story. I would still recommend the game for the fun factor but I think you should buy this only if it is on sale (like 75-80% sale).

FINAL GRADE: 62%
Well, at least the game is true to their "barren wasteland" theme.

8-Bit Review (Reviews in 150 words or less)

Mandagon is a nice and relaxing game that serves as a break from those intense, rage-inducing games we usually play. Everything from the graphics to the audio is a pleasing experience. The controls are also simple enough and easy to learn. The story is good too, although I don't really know how to feel about having to look for totems just to unravel the story. On one side, it is really creative and fun, but on the other, considering that the story is presented in a riddle-like manner, it is quite exhausting. Nevertheless, the game is truly enjoyable! Thank you for a wonderful and enchanting experience.

Don't buy this game if you:
- don't like time manipulation (but who doesn't like time manipulation)
- don't like reading
- hate puzzles that are hard as steel balls (trust me, I first played this game back in 2010 and hated it so much because of the puzzles that it took me 6 years to convince myself to try it again)
- hate thinking about the ending for days, looking at game forums about how other players interpret it, then getting mindblown when you finally piece everything together

If you are not any of these, then hit that "Add to Cart" button and stop reading these reviews already!

We all had that dream of being in a zombie apocalypse, tearing down through hordes of mindless brain-eaters as we show off our complete bad-assery. I know you have that dream but it’s not enough to just own a crossbow and ride a big bike towards the sunset. You’ve got to learn How to Survive! Developed by EKO Software and published by 505 Games, How to Survive is a survival RPG set on an unknown tropical, zombie-infested archipelago and your task is to find a way to leave the islands and survive while doing so!

GRAPHICS

The game truly captures that “tropical island” feel with a very good graphics quality and it’s funny how when you are playing online, you could see other players’ tombstones on the area they died. Also, the character finishers are nothing but absolute awesomeness. The only thing I did not quite like with the graphics is the fact that being in isometric view, some loots appear so small and the marker sometimes does not help in locating or identifying them. (Grade: 89%)

AUDIO

While Kovac’s voice acting is comedic gold, I think the atmosphere of the game is quite inconsistent if you’re going to judge it by listening to the audio. All throughout, you would hear an eerie background music but then Kovac starts talking to you with his dark humor or you start reading some texts from the survival guide. All of a sudden, the game gives you that light, happy feeling which is in complete contradiction with the background music. In addition to this, I find it worth mentioning that there is a big audio glitch that reveals too much of the story way before it is supposed to happen. I won’t dive into details to prevent spoilers but you’ll know when you see (or hear) it. (Grade: 45%)

GAMEPLAY

Inventory management; scarce supplies especially on higher difficulty; dynamic weather system; day and night cycle with the threat increasing at night; hunger, thirst, and energy meters, what else would you want for a zombie survival game? Even fishing is realistic! There is only one thing I did not like with the game’s great gameplay mechanics – there is way TOO MUCH ammo even in the hardest difficulty. Once you get your first gun, you can just forget about your melee weapons and just shoot your way to freedom. It kind of destroys the “look-for-resources feel” of the game. (Grade: 95%)

STORY

I don’t think there is any depth in How to Survive’s story. Right from the beginning, you can guess who the main villain is and the quests, both main and secondary, are just your standard “go and fetch” quests. There’s no background story for the characters nor the setting, as well as the infection. You’re basically there to fetch things for people so that they can help you get off the archipelago. (Grade: 65%)

REPLAYABILITY

With the different characters having different skill sets, it is quite interesting to see how you change your gameplay style with each character. In addition to this, the DLCs added new game modes and game difficulties that would certainly stretch your time mastering the art of survival! (Grade: 98%)

FINALS

If you are looking for a survival RPG game with a light story and a magnificent gameplay then this game is worth a shot. Despite the lackluster storyline and the confusing audio and atmosphere, I really think that How to Survive delivers quite well in terms of enjoyment, gameplay quality and, of course, hard lessons on how to survive an archipelago full of brain-hungry zombies!

FINAL GRADE: 78%
It's okay but Kovac wants a perfect score!

This game pisses me off, and I mean that as a compliment. You know a game is good if the puzzles are challenging enough to p*ss you off and not because of bugs, glitches, or some other issues. So thank you very much Frozenbyte for p*ssing me off in the best way possible! :D

I was supposed to write a longer review but I got sucked in by this game's story and graphics. The environment is truly stunning and the story, while light and not very complicated, is very interesting. Definitely a must buy for all ages!
