After looking up a few YT videos I was able to understand what was going on a lot easier lol. Great game, fully accomplishes it's goal of feeling like a measly soldier in a larger, grander war.

I LOVE the little bits of history before each match too. Context makes everything better.

You know when an old, rustic church or building feels like it has more soul than a modern, perfectly engineered building? That's kinda how it feel to play this game.

Note I said feels. Something is strange in how the movement and gunplay interact with the world, it feels disjointed & manufactured. I have a hard time believing the ground is real, and not just the gameplay floor with nothing underneath. Battlefield 1 (and 5) feel real, selling me on where I am being an immersive place, and this one by comparison feels lacking and lacking.

Buy it if you want, but I dould play pretty much any other shooter first.

I bought this game in a whim, “an indie game featuring a mystery in space? Heck ya!” And 8ish interesting hours later finished it.

Firstly, shoutout to the developers as they are constantly updating the game to fix bugs. They really seem to care about it, and their positivity is amazing to see. I love indie games, and want more people to share their unique visions.

The game itself has 2 big issues. Bugs and story. Let’s tackle the former first.

At level 10 the level 5 achievement popped. Weapons can stay zoomed-in. Getting stuck in crouch, settings resetting themselves, you name it, I experienced it. It wasn’t awful, just inconvenient. (The developers are working on this, but it was a big part of my experience.)

Now, story. It’s bad. (No real spoilers)

Indie games are cool for many reasons, but I love how unique and interesting the stories can be. They aren’t run through a large team, so the ideas can be very wacky or unusual.

This game has a few good ideas, not as many as I’d hoped, yet they’re executed poorly/weirdly. Specifically the main character is dumb. I have no idea why he was approved to be on the moon. He has this weird arc with the robot about empathy, but it doesn’t feel earned and is very surface level. He reacts to everything just weirdly enough that it makes me wonder what the voice actor thought was happening in that scene. It’s off-putting when he jumps to massive, world-altering conclusions and the game just expects me to take it as fact, despite his clear lack of intellect in everything else he says.

Normally this is all enough for me to quit playing. But the game has one thing going for it. Level design.

My fellow gamers, when I was a young teen I played this iPod touch game called Galaxy on Fire 2. (Or GOF2.) I distinctly remember the design of the space stations as they were so cool, and opened my eyes to the possibilities of gaming.

When I first went into space, and saw that space station, my jaw literally dropped. The design immediately brought me back over 10 years, to that feeling of, “this cannot be real!”

I think the developers have really mastered using scale. My main goal when playing was to enjoy the combat, so I could stand in awe and marvel at the beautiful design of the next new area.

Hang in here with me peeps, last past is bullet points:

-Scale is awesome, but the way gameplay utilizes that scale is lacking.
-The way the last part of the game is over decorated is super cool, but I feel those resources could’ve gone to filling out the empty spaces in some of the previous levels.
-The game is ambitious, and I love it for that. But it could have shortened into the story by 50%, tightened up the dialogue, and I would’ve had just as much if not more fun.
-The ambient audio often hurt my ears, and I couldn’t listen to it after more than an hour at a time on regular volume. (However, I tend to have overly sensitive ears.)
-Seriously, the game has a lot of locations. I was thoroughly impressed with the ambition of the devs.

Ultimately, I had a good time. This feels like an indie game from new devs, and I look forward to seeing what they create next. Play it if you’re curious!

Do yourself a treat and play the campaign, it's intuitive, fun, well-paced, funny, and has extra objectives of you want more of a challenge. I kept thinking I had all the tools I could ever want, and yet constantly found each new tool so good I couldn't imagine playing without it. Have I mentioned how good the campaign is?

I bought this on a whim, and cannot express how enjoyable this is. Please give it a try!

Edit: First game I've 100% in a year. What a wonderful experience, thank you to the whole team who created this, it has been a joy and pleasure to play <3

Voices sound like decent AI, but in the 4 games we played the same one-liners were used every time. textures on models looks off and inconsistent. Game play isn't well explained.

Funny for 20 minutes, needs tones of work to the point it's a whole different game imo.,

I found this game thanks to Jacob Geller, he has incredible video essays on life and games. I'm so glad he talked about this as it's so fun and intriguing, yet not too long for my ever-decreasing free time.

Edit: It's been a minute since I've played, so I've had some time to reflect.

Rouge likes just aren't my cup of tea, yet this game is so quirky it brought joy to me despite the repetition. If rouge likes ARE your style, I highly recommend it!

This game is shockingly good. I feel like some tweaks need to happen, as it is a rough one for my pretty good gaming system, but it's already extremely enjoyable. Love what the devs have done and hope they continue with the fantastic updates!

Idk who'll actually read this, but I really wanna talk.

The Backstory

I am 24. For as long as I've been playing games I've gravitated towards newer, shiny titles. GTA 5, The Witcher 3, AAA open world games. It wasn't that I disliked older games, I would just miss the obvious elevator button and wonder why I wasn't moving, or get confused by the dated graphics and level design. I felt like I was playing a game with lingo I didn't understand, and that wasn't fun for me.

What Changed

I got busy. I work, have my own startup business, and for the past 9 months I've been in a really solid relationship. (We actually just moved in together a few months ago! Yay!) Balancing being a good boyfriend while working on your own business unsurprisingly leaves very little time for gaming. This left me in a position where I didn't want to screw around with what's trending, I wanted to play something that respected my time.

Strip away all the flashy gimmicks, what I love in a game is a grounded story with weight. I want my choices and actions to matter, and I want to feel like the artists really cared about their work. And that my friend, is Oblivion.

I love this beautiful, imperfect game

Like a classic movie, Oblivion has a grounded plot. NPC's act like they actually live in the world they're in, and "crazy" moments feel carefully handpicked. When I arrived in Kvatch my jaw dropped at the sky turning red, and how quickly the vibe changed! Most of the game I am walking and talking, so when the combat does happen there's weight to it.

Oblivion came out in 2006, where there was naturally more limitations on what could be achieved. And yet, I am blown away by the creativity of these quests! Painted World, man trapped in his own dreams, bar on a boat going out to sea while I slept, etc! Having played Fallout 4 and Starfield, I'm used to a creative quest announcing itself. Yet Oblivion quietly draws me in, unsuspecting, just to blow my mind.

The map is so smart! I love how the tower is a landmark that can be seen for miles, it really makes me feel like I'm on an adventure whenever I peek back at it to see how much ground I've covered. I'm constantly finding beautiful compositions in the landscapes, that make me stop whatever I'm doing to enjoy the view.

The modding community is HUGE! Getting Oblivion to run with mods wasn't easy for me, but with patience I got it pretty stable. Better Cities, improved landscapes, updated faces, anything you'd want is out there. (Ask me about my favorite mods, I'd love to talk about them lol.)

Final Words

Is it perfect? No! I have so many QOL mods running, and I feel like I'm driving a car held together with duct tape. But the grounded, creative core of Oblivion keeps drawing me in. I hope this game finds you in the right moment, because it's really worked for me.

Much love, thanks for reading, and have a great a great evening <3
