If you're looking for a yes or no, this is a yes.

ARNF plays, feels, looks and sounds like Super Metroid crossed with The Binding of Isaac.

Since my initial review, the controls have been improved (they were good before, now they're great). Plus a very cool addition currently on the beta branch for those who push a little further than they're supposed to.

There's a solid variety of enemies and powerups.

Since my original review, we've ♥♥♥♥♥♥:
Three new zones (with a fourth coming very soon).
Shrines.
A whole lot of new upgrades/items.
A new merchant.
New enemies.
Elite enemy variants which can drop more pickups than usual or even upgrades/archaic scrap.

Runs take about 45-80 minutes, depending on layout, skill, etc.. With each run feeling like a proper Metroidvania, but shorter.

There's a lot going on. But it starts fairly simple.

The developer has been working on the game constantly since the game's release, just constantly making the game better, adding more features, zones, items and enemies. All free of charge.

The game is worth it. It is a true Metroidvania - Roguelike hybrid and it is excellent.

Oh boy, this game.
For some reason I see people compare it to Dark Souls. I've never played Dark Souls.
I don't really see it, but the game is a combat action platformer, as well as a "Metroidvania-lite".
And it's pretty dang hard (there is an easy difficulty though).

The boss fights are very hard at first, but very fair once you start to learn them. I'll get to this more *..
Bosses have a secret: Flawlessing a boss gives you a very powerful item.

After the opening area, every area is interconnected (hence Metroidvania-like), but there's not enough backtracking for new items for me to call this a Metroidvania outright, though it does feel like one.

The music in this game is awesome and fits the world perfectly. The world is much.. darker.. than it first appears.
The story is delivered in an interesting way, as each character is pretty much disconnected from almost anyone else, they live here.
Most of the sound is good. No complaints here.

Graphically the game triggers some sort of nostalgia in me that I just can't quite place.
This game looks like a SNES game, think "Demon's Crest", Actraiser or "Castlevania", but more "animé".
Still unique enough to tell apart on sight.

The game has a good ending, and a bad ending.
I got the good one first so I didn't know this until I hit the Steam community discussions.

Here's the part that gets me though.
*
The controls.
The controls are seriously among the best I have ever touched, and I played it on a keyboard.
As you get better at this game, you start to realize that you are the reason you take any damage at all.
The controls are extremely well-tuned.

If I used an "X out of 10" rating system, the controls alone would raise the game a point or two.
Combat, platforming, exploring, all of it are better because of these controls.

*Early Access Review*
Think Orcs Must Die!, except you can only use traps and one "spell".

This game deserves more attention. A very well crafted game considering that it's still in development (at the time of this review).
You are the villain in this game, with heroes attempting to reach your portal/dungeon heart.
You place a wide variety of interesting traps to stop them. Push traps, spikes, darts, harpoon to pull them into holes. So far it has everything I could ask for.
As well as difficulty runs you can apply to a map for more challenge (and more experience).

Did I mention it has a level editor and workshop support for downloading more levels? Yup.

Keep an eye on this one, it's turning out to be pretty great.

If you're looking for a third-person shooter & tower trap defense hybrid, this is one of the best out there.

If you've already played Orcs Must Die! and liked it, you'll like Orcs Must Die! 2.

If you haven't played Orcs Must Die! games at all, you might want to play the original first.
It's little easier to play since it's designed for singleplayer.

OMD!2 is intended to be played co-op (this is easy to setup, just a quick Steam invite).
The game is plenty playable solo, but some levels are an absolute nightmare without a second player, moreso on the actual Nightmare difficulty.

OMD!2 has a lot more traps and weapons to choose from.
You can grind skulls to power up and unlock different items, rather than just "5 skulling" each map (OMD!). This is not required on the standard difficulty at all.

The Sorceress from OMD! is one of the two playable characters this time around.
She has more mana and less health, as well as a different selection of traps and weapons available when compared with the Warmage, with some overlap.

Some maps on Nightmare are almost impossible without a second player. This is one of two issues I have with the game.
The only other complaint I have is that aiming feels a little off compared to the original game, especially when trying to headshot with the crossbow.
