It was one of those rare summer evenings when the air was warm and thick with the scent of grass and the fading light of the sun. Ryan and Sam were sitting on the roof of Ryan’s house, their legs dangling off the edge, sharing a cold soda and the silence that only came between two people who had known each other for years.
Ryan’s best friend, Sam, had been by his side for years. They’d played soccer together, hung out in the basement playing video games, and stayed up late talking about everything and nothing. Sam was the kind of guy who wore his emotions on his sleeve, the kind of guy who was always loud and brash, but also caring and protective.
But there was something inside of him that he couldn’t shake, something he’d been carrying for as long as he could remember. Something he had buried deep, like a secret too heavy to hold but too precious to release.
Ryan had known he was different ever since he was young. In middle school, he hadn’t been interested in the same things as his friends. While they were all obsessing over the latest comic book heroes or crushing on girls they’d never speak to, Ryan found himself watching the way two boys laughed together in a way that made his heart race—strangely, beautifully, but also painfully.
