I kind of wish that Valve could put a "Mixed" Option rather than a "Yes/No" for reviews like this as honestly, this game is one that truly deserves it at this moment.

You are getting Skyrim in Space, literally, I assumed I'd get Fallout in Space but no, the Starborn system is literally the Skyrim Dragon Shouts.

Honestly, as much as Fallout 4 felt a little bland to me pre-mods, I could at least get through a bulk of the main story without even a UI mod, whereas with SF, as soon as StarUI was launched I grabbed it, as this game needed it.

But to sum up a few friends, at this stage Starfield is very much in need of DLC's and some good mods, and due to the ... blandness of the Proc-Gen landing zones, most definitely in need of more areas to explore.

I mean that last point, I went exploring and found 3 of the same Biolabs with the exact same loot, exact same layout and exact "named" dead NPCs in it all within 500 meters.

The whole "let's integrate New Game as part of the flow" also feels heavily flat, especially as you need to do each temple 10 times to level up your skills, and these get tedious after a while.

-- All in All, this is most definitely a "Wait for GOTY and the big Story Mods" situation.

"Sixteen Tons" by Merle Travis (made popular by Tennessee Ernie Ford) is a very interesting song if you look at it's history and the words sung.

That's Lynx, the corporation that "graciously" let you become an employee for them, where you literally *are* owned by the Company, and they even own your death as well due to their clone system.

Though gameplay wise this does remind me at times of the way you could destroy buildings in Red Faction: Guerrilla, though the soundtrack is **vastly** better as well.

Even if you don't like the game much, the music is good and it really does fit the theme of the game, which makes a change from a lot of other game's OST's.

Back when Bond was a parody of the "super action spy" genre rather than the current offering, it was silly.

But who wants to play Bond, when you can play BRIAN BLESSED pretending to be Russian and take over the world.

Early Access Review
For those that have played the original Subnautica, you will have a good understanding of what to expect in regards to exploration and oxygen survival here.

However, set in the frozen wastes of 4645b you have other challenges to deal with and that adds in an extra layer of complexity, as well as the lack of the Cyclops too, so no more full-on mobile bases.

Though, as of this writing (27/Nov/19) a dev blog stated that they are redoing the story to change it up, which I have to agree, there was a "string" in there that didn't feel right, but I have confidence that UWE can pull it off.

Have fun, watch your Oxygen and don't get cold.

While the premise of the game is interesting to an RTS player. it falls a bit flat.

Or should I say that it falls flatter than the Danakil desert, the flattest place in the world, especially if you are looking for a good game to play.

Now, the RTS mechanics of limited number of vehicles has been done in Ground Control, the adaptable vehicle nature in Warzone 2100 (though CC:GA does it on the fly in your ship) and island hopping is really old style for RTS games.

The melding of them, with that you have to return to protect an Island as the automated defences aren't brilliant does make this an interesting game, on paper.

The FPS side of this falls flat as you are just "vehicle but not a vehicle" when doing that, even the ammo counter is basically a vehicle's gun, not an actual AR, vehicles will get stuck in places and can't be moved unless you have got an attachment for the plane, but then you need a bit of skill if it's doing the odd wobble.

Now, the bugs, there are some from early game still present, and the "instant detonation torpedo" bug that is in the last official patch has at least been fixed in a community patch, but is something that completely breaks the game unless you know to look for the unofficial patch.

Honestly, while I've spent ages in this to get the achievements, and had some fun in the skirmish mode, the story mode was interesting, once, and only once, the game does not lend itself to longevity, part of that is the remaining game breaking bugs, and the other is lack of good modding support and mod makers.

If you want to try it, go for it on sale.

Below I have kept my original review, I think it's worth revising this, and letting people see my thoughts when I reviewed this back on 24/Nov/2016 compared to today.

Subnautica is a game that is the "I just lost 3 days and realised I haven't eaten in real life, and the cat raided the fridge" sort of game, you can easily lose time if you aren't careful, either from wanting to explore or just sit and watch the world go by.

The art style is interesting for a game of this type, however it fits perfectly, as Subnautica isn't a gritty hell survival game but it does hide the fauna that wants to eat you, and many a person have died from wanting to look at that awesome creature as it turns out to be wanting to make you lunch.

There are mods available on Nexus Mods, and they do add some to the game, I have picked mods that make it harder (requiring more minerals, animals do more damage to you) as well as a mod to increase options for vehicle loadouts.

I highly recommend Subnautica if you are into slower survival exploration games, but there is a sequel that will be coming to Early Access that explores a new region on 4645b.

-------------------

While this isn't the most in depth game nor will it be a "I just lost 3 weeks and haven't eaten the entire time" style of game, it has it's merits.

Unknown World Entertainment, the guys that brought us Natural Selection made this feel completely different, and yet in the same universe as their previous games, and you can't cross the two easily.

The cartoon style and bright colours do lull you into thinking this is a simple game, it is not, you think you are safe, and then you find there is a shark trying to eat your leg, or there is a loud raw before you get the "you died" screen, and loose items from your previous quick-save.

While the game is still in early access as of this writing, there are a few missing things but I have seen a lot of these features added over the hours I have played, and I can't fault UWE for it as some of them are difficult.

While people automatically go "Multiplayer when?" with it, Subnautica isn't one, nor does it have the map scale for a multiplayer game, it's a singleplayer with what is developing to a rich story, and one I wish wasn't spoilt to me.

I can comfortably say that Subnautica is worth playing and has potential, however we don't know what post 1.0 will look like, or if it will have modding, but just for itself after launch, I can say that people will enjoy it.

Also, as one reviewer said "Subnautica is a horror game in disguise" all because you don't realise how dangerous some animals can be at first.

This game IS what it says, it is very FTL, I have yet to succeed, this game has a lot of replay ability, and not just for achievement hunters, it's a great way to kill a period of time.

Though I will say, Easy in this is a bit of a challenge with the end boss.
