Drawbacks are that if you want a challenge, you have to up the difficulty fairly high before you stop overwhelming everyone by the mid game and as the A.I. empires make more ships, the game lags harder and harder. a lot of government types play the same, and just zooming down the discovery unity path for 10% research speed [RS] as well as technological ascendancy perk for a further 10% RS lets you cheese the game fairly quickly.
