Amazing game, and due to the recent sale, I'm expecting to see a bunch of new players, so here's a couple tips for you rookies.

1.) Find out where hyperlane chokepoints are close to your homeworld.
2.) Expand to those quickly, develop starbase tech and weapons/shields/armor as quick as you can to effectively turn those systems into "gates" to your empire.
3.) Keep expanding to new chokepoints while repeating steps 1 and 2, while simultaneously gathering all resources within your "walls", make sure to keep your fleet upgraded and ready just in case an enemy attacks an underdeveloped "gate".

I want to love this game, I really do, but it's like my ex boyfriend that I bought a copy for so we could play together. I just can't love it. It's laggy at best, and buggy at worst, and sucks more ♥♥♥♥ than I do. I'll keep trying though, maybe one day I can love it.
