An incredible game. It has quickly become one of my favorites. The deeper I went into my playthrough the more obsessed I became with it, I couldn't stop thinking about even when I wasn't playing it. It's one of those rare games that manage to touch you on a deep emotional level. If that's enough to convince you to play it, please stop reading this review, since going in as blind as possible is the best way to play this game. Otherwise, I'll continue:

Signalis achieves this by creating a very specific atmosphere: Eusan was not a good place to live even before the events of the game and this knowledge creates a sense of dreadful hopelessness. Elster, however, perseveres despite this in an effort to get back to the woman she loves. This creates a dissonance that really struck a nerve with me. Do perhaps save this game for later if you're not in a good place mentally, though, as if you're anything like me and heavily immerse yourself in stories, Signalis might really drag you down into the dumps.

As for its gameplay elements, it reminded me of various games. The most obvious inspiration is Resident Evil, Signalis' level design, combat, puzzles and exploration could very well be right out of a mainline RE title (especially the earlier ones). Signalis also has an ability similar to F.E.A.R. of never letting you feel safe, of never letting you know what might await you at the end of the next corridor. And finally Saya no Uta came to mind, with Signalis' atmosphere of hopelessness and use of viscera and flesh to portray slowly escalating instability.

I am very happy to have been recommended this game, it's up there with the best.

I finished Control yesterday and absolutely loved it. It does a great job of connecting the Remedy universe especially Alan Wake, even if the AWE DLC wasn't too great while still telling a story that can stand on its own. Learning about all the different altered objects and altered world events keeps things fresh throughout the game and I'm told by people who know that universe better than me it could just as well be an adaption of the SCP wiki. The main character is incredibly relatable and I don't think the setting would work even half as well without her. Jesse's a very human contrast to the bureaucratic... Bureau of Control. And she also has very human faults which almost get her killed towards the end of the game. Jesse's not the only character that stands out, though, almost every major character does. The Bureau employees all have their own quirks, from Pope's almost uncontainable enthusiasm for her field to Arish's warm-hearted care for his colleagues and Underhill's almost neurotic focus on the one thing she's in the Bureau to do. And of course there's Ahti, can't ever forget about Ahti. I still have the first DLC left to play, which should wrap up Control's own story, though I'd guess that it will not completely tie up all threads since the game does work as the connecting piece between other Remedy games.

Well, I'm four hours in and not sure if I even wanna continue. So far, the only interesting things happening were refernces to previous games. The main plot has been entirely uninteresting so far. The writing feels lazy in every aspect. Just have characters talk about gore and underwear and eating people and that's really funny and fitting the world, right? No, not if you just throw it at the player with nothing to tie it all together. On top of that, the gunplay feels kinda weightless, not a good thing in a looter-shooter (even if it isn't anything new for Borderlands). I think I'll give the game a few more hours, maybe it'll grow on me, but if it keeps meandering on like it has been so far, I don't think it will.

Historical accuracy =! historical authenticity. Historical accuracy is objective, things that are proven by material and documents preserved until today. Those you can't build a game out of, you can only put them into your game as backdrop, things like places, buildings, armor or texts. These accurately portrayed things you can use to give your portrayal of history credence. Historical authenticity is a subjective concept that is both personal and socially determined. An image of an authentic history you can build a game out of, since it brings with it various narratives. And the narratives this game uses are unfortunately dreadful. However they are accepted as accurate (and hence objective) by the game's audience because of the historically accurate backdrop and the fact these narratives are commonly associated with this time period.

The best NFS in a long-while, suffers from quite a number of graphics bugs at the moment, though, and considering it's pretty expensive, you might wanna wait for a bit.
