Far Cry 2 is a game that's buggy, feels minimally play-tested, and whose only suggested fixes to fatal, game-breaking errors are "I don't know, reload a save?" and "Maybe go do something else and it'll go away." This never works.

After a 30-hour infamous-difficulty play-through, the game has been rendered impossible to progress due to an underground mission not allowing me to open a door. Yes, I killed all five guards nearby. Yes, I've reloaded a save. Yes, I went back to a safe-house and created a new save. Yes, I completed an entirely different mission and came back. Yes, I scoured the internet looking for fixes to eventually install the Multi-Fixer. No, the bug hasn't fixed itself.

Many detractors to this game's second-to-second game-play claim that malaria and gun jamming are the biggest issues. These situations, at the very least, have counter-play. Suffering from malaria? Take your pills. Gun's jammed? Mash R or switch weapons while running for cover.

You know what doesn't have counter-play? The mounted grenade launchers that appear on every truck, boat, and front porch of the game in the second and third acts. Your only option when facing one of these things is to reload a save and lose five to ten minutes of progress. Couple this with the fact that both the pump-shotgun and the mounted M2 can instantly kill from full health, enemies can see you perfectly through foliage, and enemies don't even need to be looking at you to shoot you, and you've got a game where both your wins and losses don't feel deserved.

I'm all for a game being intentionally difficult, even to the point of not being fun. Far Cry 2's chaotic shootouts and spy-vs-spy AI make for very tense and challenging situations that, aside from the above listed issues, seriously test your aim, reaction time, situational awareness, and ability to think on your feet. The game is plenty entertaining, but I just wish I could play it.

Joined a pub, overheard a conversation between two army veterans in Maine who wanted to meet up for a beer, kept playing.

This game's a diamond in the rough, especially with player numbers being awfully low, but if you can find the right 60 year old dudes named John to play it with, its kind of a blast.
