Life is Strange: True Colors
Life is Strange: True Colors is an story driven, mystery, drama in which Alex tries to use her psychic power of Empathy for good to reveal the truth of her brothers accident.

Story

The main protagonist is Alex Chen who grew up in a foster family and had quite a troubled childhood. After eight years she reunites with her brother Gabe Chen in a small mining town called Haven Springs in Colorado. After the mysterious death of her brother, Alex is determined to discover the truth of the so-called accident of Gabe. Alex makes friends along the way and learns to use her psychic power to help people in Haven Springs.

Personal Note

Well, where do I start with this? This game is beautiful, stunning, enjoyable and just feels good.

Alex is such a great character and throughout the game the player will notice how her behavior changes from a pretty reserved and unsure person to a more open person to the right people. Seeing such a character development, combined with the amazing emotional display & gestures and facial expressions she might as well be the best Life is Strange protagonist so far.

Alex just feels realistic and relatable, not only the way she is presenting herself through motion, but also the spoken and inner dialogue feels more natural and just super relatable in my opinion.

The setting – the small mining town Haven Springs feels pretty good. The levels in which the player is able to move freely feel more than decent and look beautiful. The cut-scenes are just as great as always, with the graphical improvements, the game just looks better than previous titles in the franchise.

The story is interesting and well written. I enjoyed it a lot. Without going into details of course, the plot felt understandable and I could sympathize with a handful of characters along the way, mostly because they felt as realistic as the heroine of True Colors.

It wouldn’t be a Life is Strange game without some sort of romance type of content in the game and I’m glad that both options, male and female, are amazingly written characters.

Steph, who was one of the key-characters in Life is Strange: Before the Storm, is a loveable, well written, cool, nerdy character that just fits into the game and on top of that, Steph is likely a fan favorite, which would make the male romance option so much harder to pull off, right? Wrong! Ryan is just amazing too. He is this caring, cool dude who is just a good vibe to be around. Romancing someone is totally up to you, as well as, choosing to go with Ryan or Steph – all options are valid and good.

The music reminds me a lot of the original Life is Strange and its prequel Before the Storm – which is not surprising, since Deck Nine also made Before the Storm and just continue the legacy of Dontnod while being true to themselves. The music in this game works so well because it fits the ambience and the vibe of the game. It’s a lot of back to the roots I feel like – which is cool.

The combination of storytelling, the somewhat open but still restricted levels, the characters, the music, the whole vibe itself as well as all those amazing displays of gesture and facial expression made this game so good.

There are some negative things as well - for me personally there are two which I want to cover really quick as well: This game offers likely the most free roam experience in the entire franchise so far, but I would have loved to discover a bit more throughout the entire small town. It’s definitely a step in the right direction though!

I think the game is missing some sort of photo mode. Digital photography has become bigger in the last years and many games have all kinds of photo modes in them. It pains me to see how beautiful this game is while not having an option to take impressive screenshots while roaming through Haven Springs.

Rating
    Pros
  • Good story
  • Great graphics & visuals
  • Great soundtrack
  • Good and relatable voice acting
  • Amazing gestures and facial expression of most characters
  • Interesting take on the power from Alex
  • Most key characters are well written and interesting
  • Alex continue to develop herself throughout the game
    Cons
  • Not enough free roam
  • A bit too much chromatic aberration and such for some people
  • No photo mode
  • A bit expensive for people that only play through it once
Conclusion

Is Life is Strange: True Colors worth your time and money? I think it is.

You don’t need to have played any of the other Life is Strange games to understand what’s going on. The story of True Colors works without knowing any details of any of those previous titles – sure, it would be cool to see why Steph is such a fan favorite character for some people and the small amount of references spread in the game would be nice to understand but, it’s just not necessary.

The game itself is beautiful and stunning. The story is good and well written. The characters are interesting and most importantly: Alex is a natural feeling and relatable character that makes you admire most, if not all, expression related details in this game.

True Colors surpasses the original Life is Strange with ease.

Tell Me Why
Tell Me Why is an story driven, episodic, adventure game from the creators of Life is Strange.

Story

The player controls the Ronan Twins that come back to their home town in Alaska to face the horrors that occurred in their house when they were young kids. The traumatic event changed the life of the twins forever, not only did their mother die in that night, but the twins were separated.

Tyler spent most of his childhood in the juvenile detention center after the death of his mother while Alyson was allowed to continue living in their hometown Delos Crossing.

After many years the twins re-united with a common goal: They want to figure out the truth what really happened when their mother died.

Both twins share some sort of supernatural ability which allows them to talk to each other telepathically and view visions of the past – since both main characters had always a different view on things, those visions are most of the time quite different.

Personal Note

After falling in love with the Life is Strange franchise, I was excited whenever Tell Me Why was announced. It was clear that Dontnod Entertainment was presenting their fans a new non Life is Strange game which might have caused some people to be hesitant initially.

I didn’t expect much but I was fairly excited as I’ve mentioned previously and I was quite surprised how Dontnod was able to create a game that plays like their beloved franchise with some familiar mechanics, while being in a completely different universe sort of speak.

The story felt good and the game has a handful of interesting characters and they tried their best to make the story work without being too ambitious with this project. The game has a nice soundtrack and pretty good graphics which I didn’t expect at first.

Now, this game touches the whole ‘being transgender’ topic quite a bit. It didn’t feel forced but very natural and most of the story strings that were building around this subject were woven into the bigger picture without pulling a Life is Strange 2 type of storytelling around such topics.

Unfortunately, the story of Tell Me Why is kind of short. The game offers three episodes with each roughly 3 to 4 hours of gameplay with an average of 11-ish hours completion time.

Rating
    Pros
  • Good and interesting story
  • Great graphics
  • Good soundtrack & voice acting
  • Interesting take on more subtle superpowers
  • Great concept with the fairy tale type of theme
  • Good implementation of the LGBTQ+ subject & inclusion
    Cons
  • Just three episodes
  • Choices don’t matter as much
  • Story feels a bit linear at times
Conclusion

Tell Me Why is one of those episodic story games that turn out to be a pleasant surprise. It’s a bit short and at times linear but the whole Fair Tale type of theme throughout the game and the goblin story book are pretty awesome. The relationship between the twins is very interesting and well made – a handful of characters had some depth to them and were very enjoyable to have around.

Instead of being too ambitious, like Life is Strange 2 was, they were more humble and it shows.

If you like episodic story games that kind of feel like Life is Strange or some of the Telltale Games you might want to get Tell Me Why at some point – especially since the game itself is pretty cheap these days.

Life is Strange 2
Life is Strange 2 is an episodic, story driven, supernatural-ish game in which your decisions will change the outcome of the story between the two brothers as well as their friends they made on the way.

Story

The main protagonist of Life is Strange 2 is Sean Diaz who tries to get to Mexico with his little brother Daniel Diaz after a tragic event at their home, in which Sean discovered that his little brother has some sort of supernatural abillity. Wanted by the police, the two brothers try their best to strengthen their bond on the way to their father’s hometown Puerto Lobos.

Personal Note

This is honestly a though one to review. Life is Strange 2 is a good game, full of good graphics, good music, interesting characters, a bond between brothers that is constantly being tested, a lot of choices that influence the actual endings quite a bit and a few different environments with a handful of plots. Well, that sounds pretty promising right?

I think that LiS 2 was a step in the right direction while being way to ambitious and full of things people didn’t like. Let’s start, shall we?

LiS 2 offers at least 5 major different environments in which the player faces different challenges and emotional punches. The issue is that the Life is Strange franchise isn’t really made for this many different places in a short time and it shows: Everything looks and plays good but feels off at the same time. It just might be because the original Life is Strange and Before the Storm didn’t have such a variety of locations and characters that the player is able to interact and bond with.

The many characters the player encounters are mostly very well written and interesting but there is not enough time to actually create some sort of a bond with them which makes the player not care as much when certain things happen.

The brotherhood between Sean and Daniel works pretty well but more often than not it is very frustrating that you can’t really make Daniel listen to whatever the player tells him.

All three issues that I slightly described make sense story wise. The two main characters are constantly on the move and there is never enough time to discover everything or make friends with everyone, but I feel like it unfortunately hurts the game more than it helps. I think, all those things are amazing to some extend – seeing all those awesome locations and the plots with the well written characters in it was something I really liked about the game but I can see how some, if not most, people disliked exactly those things.

The other issue this game has, is the clear political messages throughout the game itself. The whole thing about being two immigrants whilst being born in the US really was slammed into the players face multiple times in the story. There is also a time in which religion is being focused quite a lot. Sean being likely bi-sexual, or straight or gay (depending on the players choices), isn’t focused as much, just like the previous Life is Strange games had their fair share of LGBTQ+ moments as well.

Something that Life is Strange 2 does better than the previous games is the way everything is being handled: It feels more mature and at times even more brutal and unforgiving. Whilst the endings of the original and the prequel pack a punch, LiS 2 has multiple of such moments throughout the game.

Rating
    Pros
  • Good story
  • Great graphics and visuals
  • Good soundtrack that fits the vibe
  • Good voice acting
  • Interesting characters
  • A wide variety of places
  • A unique take on the supernatural aspect of the franchise
  • Choices matter more than expected
  • Endings more flushed out than previous LiS titles
  • Original LiS choice matters
    Cons
  • Political messages feel too forced
  • Too ambitious
Conclusion

Is Life is Strange 2 worth your time? If you liked the original games and if you are up for a different direction with a bigger scale, I would recommend this game.

There are some issues that I’ve slightly covered in this review that some people might not like or even hate. The political messages in this game were a bit too much unfortunately – I personally have no problem with pushing political or social agendas in games as long as it doesn’t hurt the game, in this case, it kind of ruined the experience for many and also made mine a bit less enjoyable.

LiS 2 has a whole different vibe than the original games. It is too ambitious although most of the things work out in the end – at least to some extent. This game has truly it’s good and amazing moments that Life is Strange is known for – if you’re looking to experience them, get the game.

Afterparty
Afterparty is an story driven, supernatural game from the creators of Oxenfree.

Story

The player controls Lola and Milo that just found out that they died and now have to endure hell for eternity – except there is a way to escape hell by outdrinking Satan in a drinking competition. This where the best buds decide to give it a shot and face Satan.

Personal Note

When I’ve heard that the creators of Oxenfree made a new game I was very excited to play it, unfortunately they decided to make it Epic exclusive for a certain amount of time. When it finally released on Steam, I waited a bit to just buy it during this year’s summer sale and I have to say that I really enjoyed playing through this game.

The absurdity of finding yourself in hell and the only way to re-enter the world of the living is by winning a drinking contest against Satan is actually quite hilarious.

The story itself is entertaining and interesting and is constantly followed by discissions that seem to matter at least a bit. Just like the previous game from the developers, it follows the 2.5D style and is very conversation heavy.

Rating
    Pros
  • Nice story and good humor
  • Great graphics and aesthetics
  • Great soundtrack that fits the vibe
  • Good voice acting
  • Interesting concept and design
    Cons
  • Mini games are too easy
  • Epic exclusive deal
Conclusion

Now, is Afterparty worth to get? If you like sidescrollers / walking simulators full of conversations with an interesting story that comes with some cool and unique ideas then I would say it’s worth your money – although I would personally wait for a sale since the initial price tag might be a bit high for some people that only plan on doing one playthrough, especially since it only takes roughly 6 hours to complete the game.

This game comes from the developers that made Oxenfree and you can tell that. The dialogues and how the game plays are heavily inspired by their first game and it just fits perfectly, so if you liked their first game you might end up enjoying Afterparty as well.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an action-adventure game in which Lara Croft tries to save the world from a Maya apocalypse.

Story

The story begins very Tomb Raider like, Lara Croft tries to stop Trinity once more but ultimately fails and a chain of apocalypse like events start to happen. It’s time for the player to stop Trinity once and for all, while discovering new places and trying to stop a Maya disaster from happening.

https://steamoss.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2488787538
Personal Note

I picked this game up on a sale and I’m honestly not disappointed. Gameplay wise nothing much really changed – which is a bit unfortunate, that being said, it’s very easy to pick up especially if you played the other two Tomb Raider games in this reboot installment.

I found myself completing all the side quests and there are quite a handful of those – I would say that most of them seem to be optional, to some extend at least, but at the same time they unlock certain areas that you wouldn’t be able to access otherwise. If you don’t care about collectibles or side quests you can easily ignore them without that much of a punishment.

Although there is more positive than negative to this game, I want to mention that this game unfortunately suffers from some weird decisions like the outfit system and how the game forces you to move slower when talking with someone on the move or while walking through random areas.

The photo mode is pretty decent and for sure one of the better ones out there – so if you like to take screenshots you are good to go. You can use the photo mode in cut scenes as well.

Rating
    Pros
  • Beautiful graphics
  • Great sound design
  • Good main story
  • Interesting side stories
  • Good voice acting from the main characters
  • A lot of stuff to do if you’re interested in 100%
  • DLC Tombs are pretty decent
  • Great photo mode
    Cons
  • Puzzles are too easy
  • Controls are not perfect for keyboard & mouse
  • Just a few new mechanics
  • Voice acting of side characters seem a bit off
  • Forced walking at times
  • Game breaking bug if you shoot a laptop
  • Optimization isn’t too great in the bigger areas
  • The outfit system is pretty weird & annoying
Conclusion

Well, the question is: Is Shadow of the Tomb Raider worth getting? If you like action-adventures or if you’re a big Tomb Raider fan you can’t do anything wrong with buying the game. I’d recommend waiting for a sale in which the whole bundle is a bit cheaper – mostly because the story itself isn’t too long if you don’t do any of the side quests or optional tombs or DLC tombs.

All in all, I think it’s a good game and I hope that the possible 4th game in this new Tomb Raider franchise comes with more new mechanics and gameplay elements and more challenges that are a bit harder to complete.

Neo Cab
Neo Cab is a visual novel about emotional survival in an automated world.

Story

The player controls Lina who tries to start over her life with her best friend who disappeared shortly after you talked with her again. As the last human cab driver in Los Ojos you try to solve the mysterious disappearing of your friend while facing different situations in your very own car.

Personal Note

Back when this game was shown on the E3 in 2018 I was looking forward to play it because it looked very interesting. After the release I completely forgot about it and just recently re-discovered it while it was on sale.

After playing it for the first hour I realized that this game is a lot about reading and making choices that can impact how the story continues. I personally have no problem with reading through a lot of dialogues but I can see how some people might not be interested in reading non-voiced dialogues.

I think the game has the right amount of length – it might be short for some people but I needed roughly 5 hours to play through the story. I think having a 2nd or even 3rd playthrough might do the trick for unlocking all the achievements and possible dialogue options the game offers.

Rating
    Pros
  • Beautiful visual novel
  • Great soundtrack that fits the vibe
  • Pretty neat setting & concept
  • Interesting story
  • Some choices actually matter
    Cons
  • A bit short
  • Some characters are annoying and shallow
  • At times you can’t choose the way you would like to
Conclusion

Is Neo Cab worth getting? Well, it depends. I personally enjoyed the game quite a bit but I can see how some people wouldn’t enjoy a non-voiced dialogue heavy game. It’s a visual novel after all.

There were times were I wanted to choose certain dialogue options but I simply couldn’t because the conversation turned south and the emotions of the main character wouldn’t fit the dialogue option anymore, which kind of sucked although it was part of the whole setting & concept of the game.

If you enjoy a nice, chill but also thrilling visual novel in a future in which people usually prefer cabs that are driving by non-human drivers, this game might be something for you!
