Endzone - A World Apart
Endzone - A World Apart is a post-apocalyptic survival city builder created by a small developer team based in Germany.

Gameplay

Endzone is a lot like any other city builder game: The player has to manage the needs of the citizens while expanding and researching new buildings. Keeping everyone happy whilst managing important resources, preparing everyone for upcoming droughts & contaminated rain as well as defend the settlement from incoming raiders is the goal of the game.

Besides an endless type of game mode, the base game also offers up to 8 scenarios that vary in difficulty. The difficulty can be adjusted before starting one of those scenarios.

Endzone’s most unique feature is the exploration of ruins and point of interests which are do-able as soon as the expedition building has been build and citizens have been selected for a scout profession.

The DLC Endzone - A World Apart: Halloween is a free content update that offers a few more decoration buildings.

The DLC Endzone - A World Apart: Prosperity is a paid addition to the base game and offers more buildings and adds up to 3 more scenarios as well as varies decoration buildings.

Personal Note

I didn’t expect much when I started playing Endzone. I thought that it is just another city builder that would keep me interested for a few hours but nothing more - I was wrong.

Now, as I’ve mentioned previously, the most unique feature this game offers is the whole expedition thing. Essentially you send scouts to ruins or point of interests and when they return you can send out an expedition that will explore the ruins and bring back resources, technology upgrades, seeds for farms and sometimes even more settlers for your settlement.

The reason why I like this feature a lot is because you can choose how the expedition does things: You are in control of the expeditions and exploration missions for most part.

All locations have a certain entry point but after that you can choose to explore the upper parts of a building before going through depots or whatever the building offers. After I encountered all of the buildings and such, I started to skip the dialog but still enjoyed this feature a lot.

The Prosperity DLC offers some neat additions, that I wished would have been in the base game already but considering how cheap the additional content is, I was okay with buying it and supporting the small developer team with my purchase.

The only thing that was kind of annoying was the length of the tutorial - it took me like 2 hours to complete it.

Rating
    Pros
  • Good post-apocalyptic survival concept
  • Decent graphics
  • Good soundtrack
  • Fairly simple but also unforgiving at times
  • Enjoyable scenarios
  • Good & cheap additional content
  • Expedition feature feels pretty good
    Cons
  • The tutorial length
  • Encounters with Raiders feel kind of boring
Conclusion

Is Endzone - A World Apart worth your money? If you like city building games that are not too complicated but still offer some depth to it, your money might be well spend.

If you think that 30€ is too much, I’d recommend you to wait for a sale.

It’s one of those games that seem kind of generic at first, but still offer enough features and concepts that keeps you going for a few playthroughs and likely get you to complete the scenarios as well.

Maneater
Maneater is an open world, action role-playing game in which a shark seeks revenge.

Story

The player controls a shark who just witnessed how his mother was killed by a shark hunter called Scaly Pete. Wanting to revenge the death of his mother the goal is simple: Eat smaller fish and grow bigger until the time is right to strike back!

Personal Note

When the game was first shown on the PC Gaming Show during the E3 in 2018, I was interested in seeing more. After it being released on Steam in 2021, after it’s one year exclusivity on Epic, I was excited to finally get my hands on the game.

Reading through some of the critics and reviews in general made me decide to wait for a sale or trying to get a better deal on a different site.

The game has good & dark humor and the narration is carrying this game a lot in my opinion. Being able to collect a lot of stuff and having a few side activities in every zone makes the game better, although the very repetitive gameplay and the pretty lame boss fights are just not enjoyable, especially since it doesn’t get better later on.

Rating
    Pros
  • Good narrator that tells jokes at times
  • Good graphics
  • Great areas that are quite different from each other
  • Lots of collectibles throughout the game
  • The game is pretty silly and doesn’t take itself too serious
  • Quite bloody & gory
  • The final boss has some nice mechanics
    Cons
  • The story is pretty meh
  • Performance issues
  • Bugs (1)
  • Combat could be better
  • Controls with Mouse & Keyboard could be better
  • Infamy bosses are way too easy & animal bosses are too boring
  • Super repetitive gameplay (2)

(1) Bugs vary from boats sinking by themselves, humans and fishes just bug into walls / clip through objects and humans sometimes just collapse and don’t stand up for a while.

(2) The gameplay gets repetitive really quick and there is nothing that helps to make it more enjoyable – sure the side activities are nice and collecting things can take your mind off of the repetitiveness for a tiny bit, but that doesn’t make the gameplay less repetitive or better.

The gameplay is pretty much this: You enter a new area, eat prey, fight big prey that isn’t a challenge, eat humans, grind to fill the infamy progress bar for a couple of minutes, literally one shot the infamy boss, watch a cutscene, have an optional boss fight against iconic fishes like the great white shark and then you enter a new area. Repeat.

This type of gameplay just isn’t fun for me personally. Other games with repetitive gameplay at least have some sort of good story telling or side activities that cover for it but Maneater doesn’t.

Conclusion

Is Maneater worth your time and money? Honestly, it really depends but I’d say it isn’t.

If you like very repetitive games & chasing after a lot of collectibles then this game might be something you could enjoy under those specific circumstances. I’d advice you to watch some gameplay footage or read through reviews before you buy it!

Also, buying it with a huge discount is a smart move.

The best things about this game are the humor and its level design as well as the many
easter eggs.

Star Wars Battlefront II
Star Wars Battlefront II is an action, multiplayer, hero shooter that lets the players dive into iconic Star Wars battles. The game offers a great singleplayer campaign as well.

Story

The main protagonist of the Story in Star Wars Battlefront II is Iden Versio – the commander of the Inferno Squad, an elite Imperial special forces unit. After the destruction of the Death Star II the direction of the Inferno Squad changes and soon Iden Versio and her squad members will need to face a choice: Will they continue fighting for the remains of the Empire or will they stop fighting for its believes?

The story itself takes part between Episode 6 and 7 – but with the latest addition of “Resurrection” it also touches parts of Episode 7 as well.

Personal Note

Whenever Star Wars Battlefront II was launched it was not in a good place – like it really wasn’t. The media and the players were very upset in which direction DICE made this game go.

After lots of changes the Multiplayer, the coop missions, the Arcade and everything else is more enjoyable than ever before. There is also some sort of offline-play that features battles against AI.

The Singleplayer is pretty alright. The constant switch between ground and air fights feels pretty good. I also liked how the player visits somewhat iconic places while playing the campaign.

The Multiplayer is pretty fun and it’s quite obvious that this game has a pretty casual touch to it. Between the different playable modes, the fan favorite Heroes vs Villains mode offers characters from all three trilogies. The player can choose to play during the times of the Republic, the Empire or during the time of the First Order (and its counter parts of course) in massive multiplayer battles.

The Supremacy multiplayer matches feel very alive thanks to AI that is protecting critical positions and flags which is pretty neat to be honest.

If you’re a fan of dogfights during huge battles in space you can queue up for some Galactic Assault or Starfighter Assault matches which are also divided in the three previously mentioned categories.

Just recently I started to enjoy the coop related missions as well in which you either attack or defend a few positions with 4 players and a bunch of AI soldiers.

Rating
    Pros
  • Good story
  • Great graphics
  • Great soundtrack that features the classic themes from the movies
  • Multiplayer feels pretty good and casual
  • Supremacy matches feel very alive thanks to AI
  • Iconic Heroes and Villains are playable
    Cons
  • The balancing is a bit weird at times
  • A few singleplayer related issues that are caused by high FOV
  • Shrinking playerbase
Conclusion

If you’re a big Star Wars fan and you’re looking forward for a nice but short story and awesome multiplayer action that is pretty casual, Star Wars Battlefront II is likely worth your money.

The multiplayer feels pretty good and is a lot of fun, especially if you have some friends to play with. The game offers a lot and the player base is still okay in size, which means, you end up finding matches somewhat fast but at times you will encounter empty-ish lobbies.
