TOEM
Toem is a little cozy adventure in which you solve simple puzzles, help npcs in need and take pictures of creatures while trying to reach the top of a mountain to observe what this journey was really about.

Story

The story of Toem is quite simple: The player slips into the role of a young photographer whose grandmother tells them about her story how she witnessed the “Toem” phenomenon many years ago. Now your task is to see the wonderful phenomenon yourself and you get send on a journey full of cozy adventures and photography.

Personal Note

I didn’t expect much of Toem itself but I knew that it was a cozy game and I really was in the mood for such a game and saw that it was on a steep discount during the last Winter Sale and I ended up buying it. I’m a fan of virtual photography myself so the theme of taking pictures of creatures and solving simple puzzles while exploring a black and white environment really intrigued me and the game hooked me instantly. I completed one region a day and it took me about 5 hours to fully complete the game – yes, it’s short but lovely. The music, the charm and the slightly silly dialogues and absurd situations you find yourself in while you play through Toem made my day and I really enjoyed every minute of it.

But I have to say that if I wasn’t in the mood for a relaxing and short game, I might have not enjoyed it as much. As I’ve mentioned earlier, it took me about 5 hours to fully complete the game and that was fine with me but I can see how some people might not be a big fan of that especially since the game itself is very simple but full of charm and I can tell that the developers put a lot of love into it.

Rating
    Pros
  • Nice story and cozy vibes
  • Neat graphics and aesthetics
  • Good soundtrack
  • Simple but interesting puzzles
  • Wonderful & beautiful different regions
  • Fairly easy to 100%
    Cons
  • Some quests are a bit tedious
  • Pretty short
Conclusion

Is Toem worth to get? Well, it depends on what you expect from the game itself.
Should you purchase it if you expect the most thrilling story and the best graphics?
Probably not.

Should you buy it if you want a cozy adventure with a handful of little puzzles while walking through beautiful locations? Then this game might be for you – especially when you get it during a sale!

Factorio
This game is all about automating every possible process and fixing mistakes that you've made and believe me, even when you think you didn't make a mistake, you probably did.

Honestly, most of the time I'm not sure what I'm doing. Sometimes I feel good about something I did and then I realize that what I did was stupid and needs to be fixed. Factorio can be challenging and automating everything feels very satisfying.
The progression feels good as well & you always have something to do and if you're someone that likes to min-max everything you're going to have a field day with this game. Fair warning though: It's a bit addicting.

The Factory must grow - it doesn't matter how. Destroy nature. Eradicate the alien species that stands in your way. Everything must work. The Numbers need to go up. Everything must be automated. The Factory must grow.

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead

Well, the years start comin' and they don't stop comin'
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground runnin'
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb
So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the backstreets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey now, you're an all star
Get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star
Get the show on, get paid
(And all that glitters is gold)
Only shootin' stars break the mold

Arco
Arco is a dynamic tactical RPG set in a beautiful pixelated world in which your choices shape the world and your characters.

Story

There are three different tales that you experience slowly throughout the game but all three stories follow the same goal: Taking revenge on the red company which has been ruining the peaceful world of Arco in many ways.

All playable characters of Arco are different and come with somewhat unique gameplay styles.
The story itself is straight forward but enjoyable. Is it predictable? Yeah, probably but all the choices you make as a player will have an impact on your character and potentially make the game harder or easier.

Personal Note

I was very excited to get my hands on Arco ever since I saw the first trailers and playing the demo of it earlier this year made me even more excited for it.

Arco is a neat game and it took me about 12 hours to complete my first playthrough and I probably missed a few things considering that people on the steam forum talked about something that I wasn’t quite aware yet, also, looking at my achievements after finishing the game for the first time, leads me to believe that Arco could need two playthroughs to really see and experience everything it has to offer.

The combat is one of the main gameplay loops this game has and it’s semi tactical and reminds me a lot of Super Hot. You can plan ahead your moves in a tactical manner but as soon as you move, everyone and everything is moving too which makes the combat very dynamic. Despite the combat being fluent it can be somewhat frustrating – let me explain: You can win most combat encounters by kiting the enemies around since you have to spend mana to attack but you regenerate it by moving around or waiting. Some of the characters have ranged attacks which makes the combat quite easy but some characters have melee attacks which makes the combat a bit harder because kiting without getting hit is a bit harder.

This will get better later on because the more experience points you get from combat, or other events that you will encounter while exploring in Arco, the more active and passive skills you will unlock.

On the flipside, if you have more characters in your posse, you can move them individually during combat and you can combine some of the attacks with each other which leads to lethal outcomes most of the time.

Another side of the combat is the little ghosts that start popping up here and there. Those ghosts are your manifested guilt that move during the tactical phase of the combat which makes it a bit more hectic since they attack you while the combat is paused.

The idea of having such a mechanic is nice but there are situations in which having such a mechanic is more annoying than anything else, especially during Act 3. I’m not sure if you could commit to a complete evil playthrough of Arco because the manifested guilt might just overwhelm you eventually.

What is combat without boss fights, eh? Well, fighting bosses are mostly just okay. They are nothing special and that’s fine. Some bosses take a few tries because of the length or because you messed up crucial things but you will be able to beat them eventually without sweating too much.

The exploration portion of Arco is minimalistic but it works well. You move from map to map and most maps have some secret stashes that you can loot.

The dialogue is good. The story is decent. The pixel graphics are pretty and the soundtrack is an absolute banger in it’s own way.

Rating
    Pros
  • Nice story
  • Great pixel graphics and aesthetics
  • Awesome soundtrack
  • Fluid and dynamic combat
  • Combat with multiple characters feels good
    Cons
  • Combat can be frustrating
  • Boss fights are just okay
Conclusion

Is Arco worth to pick up? I would say so yes. You get at least 12 hours of content for 17,99€ which is a fair deal in my opinion, especially since you can play through it again because I’m sure you probably missed out on a few things in your first playthrough.

The story of the game combined with the combat and the simplicity of the movement and exploration just makes this a very nice and special game. Arco is a little gem with a tiny number of flaws and I’m glad that I’ve played it.

Monster Train
Monster Train is roguelike deck building game in which you are on a train that is heading towards hell.

Gameplay

Is Monster Train just another roguelike deck building game? Not really.

The twist of Monster Train is somewhat unique since you have a total of three lanes that you are defending from incoming enemies. Usually, without special modifier or boss abilities, the enemies will start on the first floor and will, if you don’t defeat them, continue going up until they reach your pyre. You lose when your pyre hits zero health points, so you better make sure to defend it with everything you have.

There are different factions that each come with a unique playstyle, their own units and champions as well as spells and you have to mix those well since you usually combine two factions with each other which gives the game more depth and a bunch of combo potential.

There is a total of three big and a handful of smaller bosses that you need to defeat to win.

Personal Note

Now, I’m probably not the only one that instantly thought of other roguelike card games that seem to be released in endless waves ever since Slay the Spire popularized this genre and you are probably right to think of games like Slay the Spire, Inscryption, Banners of Ruin or Across the Obelisk since they all have something in common: Roguelike and roguelite games mix well with deck building & card games and that applies to Monster Train as well.

The game was recommended to me by a friend and during the last Steam summer sale I finally pulled the trigger & bought it and it hooked me instantly. The art-style, the music, the somewhat unique gameplay and the fact that you can make battles harder for more resources from the get go is just an overall plus in my book.

Something else that is positive is that the text of abilities is clear to read and super easy to understand which means that people that are new to roguelike card games will have a good time from the very beginning while people that have been playing similar games might instantly cook up great combinations.

After every battle you can decide on which things to go for.
For example, on the left lane, there might be a merchant that lets you upgrades spells, a random event field and you get a unit for your main faction and on the right lane, there is a merchant that lets you upgrade units, a merchant that offers artifacts and a field that lets you choose a unit from your supporting faction.

After every bigger boss fight, you can choose between some upgrades for your pyre and you get to upgrade your champion as well.

There’s something negative that I want mention: Some buffs and debuffs are just a bit unfair to deal with. If the randomness is on your side, you might build up insanely good combinations that can fall flat almost instantly in certain encounters. The sab and frostbite effects are just very strong and can be hard to deal with at times; although it’s a very good thing when your enemies have endless stacks of frostbite on them – it goes both ways obviously.

The soundtrack fits to the rest of the game and the art style just goes well with all the monsters and champions of the game.

There is a multiplayer mode called “Hell Rush” but I haven’t tried it out so I’m not sure how good or how much fun it is. I usually just go for normal or daily challenge runs; the latter is sort of multiplayer but not really at the same time. Monster Train also offers community challenges that you can create yourself and play challenges that other players created.

There are also mods for Monster Train but I haven’t tried any of them since it’s probably best to play the base game for a while before messing around with mods.

Rating
    Pros
  • Great art style and aesthetics
  • Good soundtrack
  • Factions feel unique and change up the gameplay
  • Interesting idea for some cards and factions
  • Daily challenges
  • Progression system
  • Mod support
    Cons
  • Some runs seem unwinnable at times
  • Some buffs and debuffs are annoying to deal with
Conclusion

Would I recommend buying Monster Train? Absolutely! The game is fun and I just like it a lot.
I believe that newbies and veterans of the roguelike / roguelite & deck building genre will enjoy playing this game a bunch.

The daily challenges as well as the progression system itself keeps me going and despite sometimes feeling that runs are super hard to win – it’s a good game which has quite a bit of replayability which is very important for such games.

The price tag of 24,50€ might seem a bit high but if I knew how much I like the game, I would have bought it without a discount but I understand if you think that the price might be a bit high for you personally.

You can always wait until Monster Train goes on sale and give it a shot then.
