Wow, where to begin?

When I saw the original trailer for this game drop in 2019, I really REALLY wanted this to be my next long term game. I wanted to have as much fun with this as I did with the original Kerbal Space Program, a game which I picked up back when I was still in college a decade and a half ago. I was willing to stick around because I believed in what this could be and to once again fulfill my yearning for exploration.

A year ago, this game came out in Early Access at almost AAA prices. I was willing to pay that because I had faith that the developers would work to add in the features they said would be added in due time, that the bugs would be patched and that this game would still deliver. Now it is almost the middle of 2024 and there is word that the development team for this game has either suffered significant layoffs or has been entirely laid off. If this information is true, then my hopes and dreams of another epic space exploration game in line with the original Kerbal Space Program are dashed.

As it stands I cannot in good conscience recommend this game to anyone. I want to believe this will eventually be something good but I cannot bring myself to keep my hopes up anymore.

If I can't recommend the main game, I cannot recommend the upgrade to Super Citizen Edition. Suddenly requiring steam account linking to a PSN account to play the game three months after purchase is a scumbag move.

This game is far better with performance and is far more feature rich than when I purchased it a long time ago and its only getting better. If you like systems management, construction and survival, you can definitely go right with buying this.

Note: The learning curve can be a bit harsh at first, but there are plenty of videos on youtube and a lot of workshop content that can definitely help you out.

My previous review was based entirely upon the fact that this game appeared to have no further development occurring. As the developers are now posting updates again, I am willing to recommend this title as presently the most visually appealing available storm chasing game available now on Steam.

As promised, with the stability fixes, I have revised my position: This game can be a lot of fun, particularly in multiplayer so long as your partner doesn't get your shift ended early for gross misconduct.

You haven't truly lived until you've committed hundreds of war crimes in an afternoon and not only avoided consequence but thrived as a result of them. Welcome to Rimworld, a game that will challenge your morals and ethics because survival definitely trumps all other concerns.

My opinion of Deserts of Kharak as of 3/14/16 (subject to change).

Pros:

Engrossing story (particularly when placed into the context of the Homeworld mythos).
Straight-forward 'rock-paper-scissors' gameplay with options for more advanced combined arms tactics.

Cons:

Price ($50 was a bit much for this title, might have given it a pass if I had acted early on and gotten it for the Homeworld: Remastered purchasers price).
Length of the single-player campaign felt very short, hopefully multiplayer will make up for it.

Addendum: A solid addition to the Homeworld series and hopefully a sign of more to follow.

My first real time strategy game and the start to one hell of a ride that I have yet to get off from. If you're looking to experience what is arguably the dawn of modern real time strategy gaming, give this title a spin... Despite some clunkiness due to age (can't zoom out, for example), it is still a lot of fun and I am glad that it's still playable on modern systems.

Alright, I took a few days after my initial review, particularly since I realized that Firewatch isn't so much a game so much as it is an interactive movie, which fits the bill with the length and how the game cuts in and out at times. It provides more depth to a typical cinematic piece and allows the viewer/participant to partake in writing how the story plays out.

I won't take back my comment that the game is a visual and storytelling masterpiece and that the opening sequence still hits hard in the feels like the first 10 minutes of Up. As for the game costing $20, I usually run about $10 or so to watch a 2 hour film, so given it played out in 4ish hours, I've come to grips with the cost and therefore I'm going to go ahead and give it a recommendation.
