I just finished the game (yes, the real ending) and can confidently say this is one of my new favorite games.
Signalis is a game that makes me struggle to describe the ways I felt as I played it- it's more than horror. There's no ooga booga jumpscares, or scripted chase sequences, or hiding in lockers, it doesn't really fit the usual textbook definition of a scary horror game; though it is certainly unsettling.
It's environments and unnerving atmosphere lend it to a kind of anxiety that I haven't really seen in other media. As you progress you get a sense of deterioration- like everything around you is falling apart- which (avoiding spoilers) lends itself well to the powerful conclusion to it's story.
Oh my GOD the story.
The narrative befits this game so well. You feel such an overbearing pressure from the stakes and the game design, yet still keep an inclination to push on thanks to its cryptic intrigue and your quest to find a certain someone. Its absorbing in-depth dystopian/cassette futurism world lends an interesting setting to a narrative dealing with the concept of losing ones sense of self, and the implications on what the bounds of humanity really are in a world full of clone-robot-military-cyborgs.
The ending to this game moved me unlike almost any piece of media has... ever. The culmination of all your work with your sense to trudge on leaves a lasting impact when you finally reach the final destination.
Shut up I'm not crying you're crying
10/10 will probably play again
