What happens when you splice together the mechanics of Company of Heroes 2, the setting of Total War, the violence and graphics of Hatred (Minus that black and white filter)?

You get this. And this is amazing.

Features:
Solid single player campaign, with 10 missions for the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons and 5 for the Germans and Slavs (With more being added soon supposedly), rotating day-night cycle and changing weather that has tangible effects on gameplay, excellent soundtrack and voice acting, and fantastic combat animations that can be viewed in gruesome detail with their cinematic mode.

Bugs:
A game that seems to be released in a finished state is sadly a rare treat in 2018, and this game is fortunately one of them. I have not encountered any serious bugs or glitches, with the only 2 that come to mind being that occasionally buildings that get destroyed while being repaired will have pieces floating mid-air, and twice I have encountered a bug where a village center couldn’t be captured, but both of these times it was at the end of the match and had no real effect on gameplay.

Gameplay:
This game seems to take most of its inspiration from Company of Heroes 2, and it executes it quite well. Everything Ancestors borrows however, it adds its own spin to. It takes the same concept of capturing resource points on the map, but instead of generating a flat rate like in CoH, you must order those resource points to dispatch peasants to actually gather those resources, which can be targeted by your military units, harming your opponents economy without actually having to capture the resource point. It features the same truesight, but the rotating day-night schedule affects your units’ sight range, and you can hide squads in long grass to perform devastating ambushes.

Takeaway:
This game is great. Its simple, its violent, and its fun. It can be suprisingly challenging at times as well, compared to many other RTS games. The unit roster is somewhat limited, and all units perform in a fairly rock-paper-scissors manner, but it works well, and the limited rosters make the 4 factions play differently. If you enjoy games like Company of Heroes or Dawn of War, you will thoroughly enjoy this one. Being a massive fan of RTS, I wholeheartedly reccomend this game.
