Firstly, I wish there was a neutral voting option - the game is cheap and possibly entertaining as a desktop background, which it can function as - sort of.

BUT as a D&D tool it seems it's uses are very limited. It's certainly possible that some of my gripes with it are actually just me being unable to find the settings I needed, but the settings menus are pretty small and quick to skim, and I certainly did try to find these features (And I don't want to spend too long since I'm going to be refunding it as it's not what I was hoping for)

I was hoping to use this to generate a map AND history for that map to use in a D&D campaign.
On both fronts I have issues though:

1) For the map side, it seems to have a fixed size of roughly a quarter of the globe, and I could not find a way to increase this to be a full globe despite my best efforts. (It's limited to plus/minus 90 degrees east/west of the meridian, and plus/minus 47 degrees north/south of the equator. But a full globe is +/-180 east and west, and +/-90 north and south)

2) The map doesn't auto save when the program is closed, so if you forget to save the program and close it, then when you open it up next time you'll instead be looking at a new/different map with no copy of the one you had been working on.

3) Because of #2, the history of your map can also easily be lost, especially if you wanted to leave it open and running for a while to generate a lot of history while you were away and your computer/game were to crash while you were away - you'd lose all the history it had generated since your last manual save.

4) certain buttons, like reviewing the history, automatically unpause your map which can result in changes being made to the map/history after you had meant to 'freeze' it and export it for other usage.

5) while you can adjust basic parts of each state/country, there is no way to take complete manual control over certain aspects like who goes to war with who/when, so if you wanted to force certain elements into your world's history you cannot, so you better like what the random generator gives you. This applies to more than just the wars too.

6) the world history generation has a limit to how fast it can be generated, even if you have a computer that could've generated much more much faster. (limit is 5x base speed) I'd rather have an "as fast as possible" option for generating world history so I could generate centuries of lore and conquest quickly.

7) world history generation also pauses while you are reading through the history on past years, which is really quite unfortunate because, like #6, I'd like to generate a lot of history and I'd also like to read up on some of what's going on while that happens

8)Obviously some states die out and new states are formed, and I'm not 100% sure on this but it seems to me that these don't two events happen at similar rates, maps seem to always trend towards an average number of countries regardless of how many they started with, I wish there was a little more control over these factors so we can keep maps with a (roughly) target number of countries. (or so we could intentionally start with a different number than the target we want and watch the countries bloom or die out as the world evolves)

Again, I want to iterate, that for what seems to be a very polite and honest developer, this tool seems awesome, and I really am glad that other people are getting good use out of it at least. But I bought this specifically thinking it would be a good tool to use for my D&D campaigns, and it's turned out to not function the way I expected so the other tools I have already are better. No ill will meant towards the devs! <3

Yes, I recommend it. It's free and it's easier than going through packs individually. BUT - it's also pretty meh. I wish we could make our own custom folders (more than just the favorites) - I want to make custom folders to hold games grouped by other categories for my own quick access too.

Also, for some reason, all the prices are being listed in some foreign currency, "PYO" (looks a bit like that, but it's not actual English alphabet characters) and I can't find a settings menu to change that??

Also... after launching it the first time it literally won't reopen again. I start it on steam and nothing happens, steam says it's running but it's not, it's not even in task manager. It's just super bugged already... so uh, maybe it's not even better than going through the other packs directly afterall if this keeps happening...

Edit: Sony backed down.... FOR NOW. They did not make any promises for the future, only talked about this one effort. I'm leaving my negative review until they assure us that they will not attempt to backdoor in some other version of this change again. I was thankfully able to refund the game during all this nonsense, I'll be waiting a while again before reconsidering buying it fully.

Been thinking about trying this out for a while. I just bought it finally, only to be greeted with a screen asking me to create a Sony PSN account to link to my steam.

I live in a region where PSN accounts are available without a console, but I still will not create one and link it to my steam just for one game that definitely didn't need it, and did not advertise it originally.

Sony has been hacked:
3 times in 2011, once in 2014, once in 2017, at least once in 2023. In all cases, customer data was leaked/exposed. Yet the devs tell us that linking to sony makes us safer? The claim that linking accounts helps them ban cheaters more effectively is a bold faced lie. Sony is pushing this down from on high to boost their monthly active users, and nothing else. And they're doing it at the cost of the reputation of this game, at the cost of the safety of it's existing players, and at the cost of your privacy. This is an anti-consumer move, through and through.

I'll be refunding this game shortly. Thankfully I hadn't bought it before all this nonsense changed. I feel bad for the gamers who don't have this option anymore because they had the terms of their purchase changed on them months after they bought the game.

To Valve: please re-consider the policy on refunds when companies make drastic decisions that can prevent many players from accessing the game to begin with.

Honestly, looks absolutely amazing. It runs fine for me. But I'm on a brand new computer with some stupid high end specs... I had also gifted two copies to some friends that I wanted to play with, but neither was able to run the game. One had serious performance issues, and the both had issues with constantly disconnecting. These aren't issues for any other games we play together so I'm quite sad to see it. I really hope this game continues to grow and improve, because I agree with many of the other comments that it has A LOT of potential.... but it's not there yet, I'd encourage other potential buyers to wait. The devs still seem active, but if they dropped off from active development any time soon I'd feel awful for recommending this to anyone who bought it in it's current state, and I can't recommend things based off the potential alone.

Edit: a little over 2 months after this expansion first came out and they've JUST released one more spirit from this expansion. So at this pace we won't even have the full 10 spirits that came with this expansion until over a year from today? Sometime in 2025 summer, hopefully? I stand by my original sentiment, so I'm leaving this review for now. Spirit Island in general is still a great game, both on the board and in this digital format. I'm just not pleased with the way this expansion's digital release was handled and I wish it was clearer that this is not the full expansion (yet). Eventually I'll update to a positive review when most of the expansion is playable at least.

A great expansion for the original game, but I did not realize when I was purchasing this that it wasn't the full expansion (yet).

This DLC, at the time of writing now, only includes 2 of the 10 spirits that actually came with the physical expansion, includes none of the aspects, none of the scenarios, and some other parts of the expansion are also missing currently.

The details of the DLC page here on steam DO explain this, but I had not seen that until after I'd already bought and played this for a while, because I assumed it would be complete like every other DLC for the game currently on steam. Additionally I'm a bit sad to see that it looks like the devs are planning to drag this on for 8 more releases? With no announced date for when the first one will even be...

I'm not sad I bought this, I'd certain end up buying it either way eventually at least, but I wish it was more obvious than this DLC is incomplete. I'll update my review to be positive when more content comes out for it.

I love this board game, and this PC remake of it is doing a great job of staying faithful to how the original game works, and I hate giving a negative review - if more of the other reviews already mentioned this I don't think I would, but the fact it's not being discussed and it's so hard to see in the description makes me want to help others who may find themselves in the same situation I was in.

There's been a clear trend ever since the update from original Overwatch to Overwatch2, Blizzard has been reworking characters to make them less unique and more "samey".

They're re-making characters to appeal more to the traditional FPS gamers who might try OW2 after playing CoD or Apex - and it's happening at the cost of what made those characters the most fun or unique.

•Mei lost her freeze on left click in exchange for more damage.
•Bastion lost his self-heal for a damaging grenade. And lost his toggle-able immobile form which was extremely unique for a generic buff with a duration and cooldown like you'd expect from most other games.
•Doomfist lost his insane mobility/surfing that the community loved practicing in custom parkour maps to instead be turned into a very mediocre tank.
•McCree/Cassidy lost the stun that made him a unique counter to a handful of characters and instead got more damage on the ability.
•Brigitte lost her unique ability to provide armor ontop of max hp to be converted into generic healing instead.
•and most recently: Pharah lost her incredibly unique flight in exchange for... you guessed it - more damage.

What do every one of these changes have in common? They took away something that other game's would've been afraid to give to a character, something unique that you'd only have found in Overwatch1 - and instead they reworked these characters to play more "normally" - to require less practice to understand and get the most out of, and to be more like what players from other games would expect.

I was originally a Mei main but I quit her entirely when OW2 came out, I've mained Pharah since, but after her last rework I'm no longer interested in her. Even if both of them are fundamentally stronger now, they're just less fun.

I also enjoyed old bastion and doomfist much more.

Maybe in a few more years we can get an oldschool 07scape esq revival of Overwatch1 as it used to be for those of us who enjoyed the more unique game that this once was.

Some other gripes with overwatch:
•the rework to free to play has made the game more accessible for hackers than it ever was before
•the rework to free to play also effectively took a game many of us had already paid full price for and removed many of the free rewards we used to enjoy only to begin selling them back to us at absolutely obscene prices.
•blizzard has fallen down the same path many other modern games have gone, where every new character is balanced to be clearly overpowered and they sell access to these characters on launch for a premium price. It's annoying, game ruining, and just so predictable nowadays.
•blizzard as a company leaves much to be wanted - with a china-first policy when it comes to any censorship topics the CCP cares about, even from professional players in other regions. An absolutely abhorrent reputation for their abusive office culture. Ttheir tone deaf and clear disregard for their players with constant cash grab garbage games like diablo immortals. And their lack of candor or tact when canceling the official pro scene for HotS after months of delaying the question and leaving their pro players hanging about whether or not they'd have jobs the following year. An all around awful company nowadays -- and truly tragically so, as Blizzard was definitely one of the greats in the past. How far they've fallen...

Play Guild Wars 2 or FFXIV instead of WoW. Play Path of Exile instead of Diablo. Play a different FPS too, there's plenty of options. Honestly as awful and buggy a game as Paladins is, I at least enjoy the characters there more now.

Game in current decade that doesn't support a borderless windowed option?!? Seriously? :(

I'm sad because this looked like a genuinely good game, but I need something that won't minimize itself everytime I alt tab. Their "Fullscreen (windowed)" option is behaving the same as "Fullscreen (real)" for me, neither stays open when alt tabbing, which is definitely a shame :/

This is a basic feature in nearly every other game these days. Unfortunately I think I'll be refunding this since I can't seem to find a workaround (launch argument?) to run it in a way that functions as I'd like. At least no option that doesn't use third party software.

Just inspired to come write an honest review during all the recent negative review posts:

The economy in this game is genuinely awful. I'm not that high tier, and the silver lion drain is already getting to be very problematic. I was actually considering buying the premium currency for a few things (and premium account status for a bit), but the costs in US Dollars for small things in this game is so ungodly expensive that I cannot excuse it.

I skimmed around for a while and found a TIER 2 vehicle that I wanted the most and went to look up how much it would cost....it is $70.... 70 dollars! wtf?! Most vehicles appear to be $60, with a handful around $30, and one cheap one per nation below that. This is the price of a full triple-A game for a single vehicle in a game that actively tries to force you to spend more money even afterwards.

I'm refusing to buy anything from this game until the developers rework the economy for both silver lions and golden eagles. The artificial scarcity of premium vehicles is not acceptable. And having to pay more than half my silver lions per match just to buy ammo and repairs is not a fun experience.

I've been trying to recruit some IRL friends into the game, because flying around in combat is genuinely fun, but the developers have gone out of their way to make sure you feel like ♥♥♥♥ between every match.

A modern shooter who's devs considered the anti-cheat system to be an afterthought which could be patched into a finished game eventually is not encouraging. These days more than ever I value a robust anti-cheat system more than the actual gameplay itself, which is a shame because the gameplay here seems more than decent for an early access game. But the arms race between cheaters and developers is a vicious one. Just adding in EAC and thinking that it will help is very concerning to me - it's widely known that Easy Anti-Cheat is incredibly easy for hacks to bypass, and it will require much more work from the devs to secure their game and the servers it's played on.

I hope for the sake of the game that the devs shape up and prove that they have what it takes to create a top tier experience. Lack of effective anti-cheat keeps me out of so much of the FPS genre, and it will keep me from reinstalling this game until the problem is truly tackled in an effective manor. At the time of writing I played on about 8-10 different community servers over the course of the past week or so, and every single one had a cheater on it who was spamming hundreds of grenades and RPGs, speed hacking, and/or aim hacking (lasering through multiple walls from across the map), all blatantly.

A game built fully with anti-cheat bandaid slapped on at the end is bound to end up as the untrustworthy nightmare of a release that Amazon had with New World, where it's going to be trivially easy for cheaters to abuse extremely powerful scripts and cheats. And it's going to be genuinely impossible for a player or admin to tell whether someone is using more "subtle" types of cheating.

It's important to note that the prevalence of blatant cheating is the easier problem to see and track, but eventually when the devs do (hopefully) get it under control, my confidence in whether they will have been able to do anything to prevent subtle-cheating will be near zero still - and that type of cheating still ruins the environment and trustworthyness of a game in the long term.

Never before have I used the phrase "crackhead maths", not until today when I had no other words to describe what I can only assume is how the developers of this game decided on the damage numbers for the abilities. I played 6 matches on all different characters, which was more than a third of the full game's roster, and a majority of the free characters. None of them really did that much damage, they all just tickled the opponents slowly. Then I met two characters in a game who could one shot me from full health in under a second. Dunno how that was deemed reasonable when most of the roster is having a pillow fight with eachother.

It's early access though, so whatever, you might think? Well, I can give the devs a pass for having horrible balance this early into a game's life. (though I'd have hoped no developer would miss the mark by that much)

But! There's other systemic problems that I genuinely am concerned about: the progression system gives characters more power over time, which carries over from match to match, which already cries afoul of most modern "competitive" titles, which is what this one claims to be aiming for by it's own self-description.

Additionally some people may like the more barebones character designs, but just over two hours in and I was already feeling the same-y-ness of all the characters I played. They all played extremely linearly with very little room for creative expression. Characters only have 2 basic abilities (generally on long cooldowns), an auto attack, and an ulti. The order the basic abilities are meant to be used in is pretty clear for nearly all characters too. Just kinda wished the characters would be a bit more different from eachother. This could all change eventually, but it's a lot of work in this direction already that I can't imagine the developers would want to move away from. To try and make it a bit more clear what I believe the problem is here: if you look at each class of characters (like all the mages) they all play very similarly to eachother. The "tactics" part of the game doesn't really change from one mage to another. The way you approach a fight doesn't either. "Sit at max range and poke slowly". Fundamentally MOBAs with more abilities per characters end up having more engaging combat, at least to me.

The map / gamemode are neat though. The last issue is just a general concern for any "comptetive multiplayer game" from a smaller studio: anti-cheat. Cheating is an epidemic in modern competitive games, and smaller studios rarely get it right. It's way too early for it to be a problem, and it's way to early to critique the developer's performance in this area, but it's something to keep an eye on as the game gets worked on, because eventually the devs will have to address it if they want this game to have any real audience at all.
