I have faith in The Prophecy. This will be a good game. In fact I have believe in it so much that I'm already going to recommend this game. The Triumphant PAX TRINTRAGULA shall come into being and elevate this game to the godliness it was meant to be.

I wanted to try this game out purely to try and have some fun with the Eastern Roman Empire, Unfortunately it's not very fun unless you're playing as a Horde or the Huns.

I don't mind siege defense and fighting when outnumbered, in fact I like doing that. It's what makes Total War games especially fun for me. But I like field battles and going on the offensive after a succesful siege as well, and that's not something you should do in this game when playing a Roman faction.

Your units are just straight up worse in a field battle compared to barbarians and nomads, even tech upgrades and unit reforms don't do much. Your units will always be worse in the field compared to another faction. Even your General's bodyguard unit feels like a mob with pitchforks fighting against knights with full body armour.

And that's just the battles, now you could simply build up stacks of units that autoresolve views as favourable. It's pretty easy to win almost every battle like that with the income you have as the ERE.

But the campaign map is even worse: upgraded farms give -2/-4/-6 public order in a time where food is scarce and famine is frequent. A blacksmith gives squalor because ironworking attracts the plagues, of course.
-40% income on EVEN NORMAL DIFFUCULTY from 40% corruption, purely because of the amount of settlements you own. Might as well make the barbarians take half, you'll still make the same income.

Diplomacy is a joke as per usual for a Total War game, but even worse in Attila. The usual 10 turn countdown before being allowed to attack an enemy after a treaty (10 turns for a non-aggression pact, and an additional 10 turns after you ended it for a grand total of 20 turns.) But wait! There's more! Attacking an enemy who's allied to someone who you have a treaty with or ended a treaty with, meaning you indirectly attack them, still gives you the same penalties!

TL;DR Play as the Huns and declare war on everyone with no regard for trustworthiness, spam archer and shock cavalry, and have fun. Or, don't buy this game.

EDIT: Playing with the Radious Mod fixes a lot of issues, corruption is much more balanced and buildings actually make sense, and so does religion. Battles are also less terrible with the new units the mod adds to the game. If you really want to play this game I highly recommend you install that mod right away before doing anything else. It's essentially a big patch that the Radious mod team made for the game, they're doing the work that CA should be doing.

Just going to recommend because this really should say Overwhelmingly Positive instead of Very Positive.
