My name is Troy Brown. I was born with very thick veins in my heart , the doctors warned my parents about this. Until the age of six my parents fed me only nutrient paste and water. At the age of 7, my parents decided stop having me go to school every day. My parents left me to feed myself, after getting drunk every day and night at the various clubs they went to.
Child support claimed my parents as unable to parent "not a safe environment for a child". So in 2008 I went to go live with my aunt Sofia. She was unaware of my clogged heart veins, and changed my diet with soda, and cakes she made daily. I ate and I ate, and around a year later, I had a seizure and an ambulance was called to the apartment.
I stayed at the hospital for about six months, and an old friend from my class came to visit me. His name was Sean
He had brought an old 2007 laptop with him. He gave it to me and launched an application called Steam. He clicked on a game called Counter Strike Source.
He left me there with his laptop, and told me to try the game. I played day after day, feeling like I was actualy getting better.
I was able to get out of the hospital after 26 surgeries. I moved back in with my aunt, and she greeted me back into the apartment with a new laptop, and keyboard with a brand new gaming mouse. I guess she noticed that I was playing pretty much the whole time.
Over the years, I stopped playing as much. And I began taking an interest in other sports that kids my age played. I joined the middle school soccer team and met a large amount of friends. I was able to compete with them in the state level championships. One time we even got first place.
I finally felt like I was able to do something productive, I felt as if life was going to be fine from there on. My aunt was helping me with my school work, and allowed me to do pretty much whatever. But I guess I had too much freedom.
You see, there comes a point where because of the freedom you start making stupid decisions. And that was me, my diet started going back to the way it was before. I was gaining weight at an astonishing rate, and it happened again. June 18th 2012, I had another seizure.
I woke up to myself laying in a bed next to a man, somewhere in his 30's, who was clearly a doctor at the hospital. He told me that everything was going to be fine. I then drifted back into sleep.
After about a month of medical exams, doctors talking to my aunt. I was informed that I was going to have to undergo surgery. I was told that they had to replace the veins in my heart, and there was only about a 30% success rate. But if I didn't try, it was certain that I would die.
The operation started and I was given a shot that made me drift into a deep sleep. One that I would either come out of in a few days, or never.
A few days past, and I was awoken to the sound of my aunt talking to me, telling me how everything was going to be fine. And after a couple of months of recovery, my friends Sean introduced me to the newer version of Counter Strike. I was amazed at the graphics, and as soon as I started playing, I didn't want to stop. And I have been playing ever since. Just trying to hopefully, one day, become good enough to make it. To make a difference, that would show other kids like me, who had to overcome the odds, that just because things are unlikely, they can happen.
