I haven't seen a whole lot of reviews for this so I thought I'd take a crack at it, and I'll try and keep it short.

I thought it was well worth the money, it does exactly what I think a good expansion does.
It's barebones, you're put in a harsh enviornment that's very different and very hostile. You're forced to adapt and think differently than vanilla DS or RoG. The learning curve is harsh, and punishing, but like RoG it's satisfying to learn adapt and overcome these new challenges. The sailing mechanic is well done, and exploring the different kinds of islands was exciting and at the same time dangerous.

The only real complaints I have is the poison mechanic, and that some of the more essential items (gold) are a little too hard to come by. I found myself without a science machine for longer than a season, and at that point I had given up. Maybe it was just my bad luck!

For just $5 it's hard to beat, if you've found the original game and expansion to be stale this expansion is a great place to jump right back in. And then when you're done, you get to relearn the formula for surviving on the mainland.

I'd give this expansion a solid 8 out of 10, I think Klei and Capybara have done a wonderful job.

My most relaxing night was the night I sat in a corner, staring at the only door as something banged against it countless times on end waiting for whatever was on the other side to burst through and kill me.

On another note, I succumbed to drinking and hurting random strangers to cope with this.

Remember how everyone said this game would be perfect with multiplayer?
Well. Now we have that too.

On that note, watched my friend get killed by a treeguard in front of me.
Spent that night talking to a ghost.
You know how it is.

Well.
At least 'I' liked it!

One of the only games where crying at my enemies managed to kill them.
Next to Dark Souls, of course.

The Nostalgia is real in this one.
Don't listen to RockPaperShotgun on this one guys, the puzzles are unique, grim, and fun. Haven't had one problem with it on Windows 8!

Okay. Where to begin with this one.
Note: I got this game free from PC Gamer's Indie Week thing. But I would pay for this game, especially after playing it.

Short and Sweet, here we go.

+ There's a metric ***load of lasers.
+ There is a lot more explosions than lasers
+ The Narrator is hillarious, at points.
+ UPGRADES
+ The Screenshot button
+ There are times in this game where I don't know what's happening anymore
+ From what I can tell, a ton of boss fights.
+ The colors really captivate my attention.
+ Easy to use control scheme, for controllers. I'm pretty sure the game technically has <2 real buttons.
+ Drilling through planets (And bosses) is fun.

That being said.

- The narrator is also useless. (I.E: Shoot the core!)
- Trial and Error gameplay, but, it's not like you won't die anyway.
- Repetitive, but, if you've played any space SHMUP you won't mind really.
- The soundtrack gets repetitive but you could always mute it and play your own music.
- You will get killed by some random mechanic you didn't know about, and get frustrated on how to get past it.
- "What does this upgrade do I don't know I'm just gonna purchase it."
