Safety after Stroke
Moving around safely and easily is not something you may think about, until you have had a stroke. Many areas of your life will be impacted and adaptations will need to be made to be safer. For example your home can be safer by modifying your home environment to prevent accidents as you move around the house or apartment. There are many different ways to accommodate your life after stroke that will depend on your strength, ability, judgment, and support.

Preventing Another Stroke
Recurrent stroke makes up about one out of four of the nearly 800,000 strokes experienced in the US every year. The best defense against recurrent stroke is good offense. Equip yourself with information and tips for preventing another stroke. Be aware of your symptoms and risk factors. Managing your health will help reduce the risk of recurrent stroke.

Finding Clinical Trials
Medicines or medical devices must go through a complete investigation and many different phases of testing (clinical trials) to prove that they are safe and effective. Get more information on what they are, if you can participate, the research behind them, and how to enroll in stroke clinical trials.

Rehabilitation Therapy after a Stroke
Stroke is one of the leading causes of long-term adult disability, affecting approximately 795,000 people each year in the U.S. The very word "stroke" indicates that no one is ever prepared for this sudden, often catastrophic event. Stroke survivors and their families can find workable solutions to most difficult situations by approaching every problem with patience, ingenuity, perseverance and creativity. Early recovery and rehabilitation can improve functions and sometimes remarkable recoveries for someone who suffered a stroke.

What can I do to reduce my risk?

Most strokes can be prevented. Although you cannot change some of the things that increase your risk of stroke, like your age, there are others that you can change.

There are six simple things you can do to reduce your risk:
Manage your medical conditions
Stop smoking
Drink less alcohol
Stay a healthy weight
Do more exercise
Eat a healthy diet
Can I reduce my risk if I’ve already had a stroke?
Although your risk of having a stroke is higher if you have already had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), there are still positive things you can do to reduce your risk.

It’s important that you:

take the medication that your doctor has prescribed
have regular health check-ups to make sure it is working for you
talk to your doctor about any lifestyle changes you need to make (like stopping smoking or losing weight) and ask about the help and support you can get to help you with them – there’s lots available.
