@TGC - regarding MMOs, communities like the City of Heroes people would like to have a word ;-)
If a game loses it's backend and/or ability to buy I personally consider it abandoneware at that stage and treat it as such with any shopping habits. It would be nice to force publishers/dev teams to take reasonable steps to ensure players don't get shafted in the long run. Having said that I keep trying to talk to the Coppenhagen Collective about one of their titles but despite numerous emails and googles I cannot find an answer to getting an old title of theirs (even willing to buy it for a third time!) through legitimate or more morally grey means

At least with MMO's it seems kind of obvious that when the server shuts down, the game is gone. It is what it is with those.

But it's kind of silly certain singleplayer games becomes unplayable because a server goes down. Like, what is that server even for? Why is it necessary? It should just have an offline patch at that point.

it's harder than it seems.... As video game developers I can say: when you buy (or activate the key) inside Steam (from a legal point of view, you do not receive a licensed copy of the games) You get access - rights to the game through your Steam library =) You do not own the games that are inside your Steam account (legal side of the issue) By creating an account Steam you agree to the policy and only receive the rights to play games only through Steam. >If you don't have the right to something, you can't claim the right to something you don't have. < Of course, there are workers who create their own ecosystem separately and integrate it into Steam! (this is another legal side of the issue). When you purchase a game through Steam - you have fun time inside games =) when this time will end - only the game developer can decide! (If you don't like it, don't buy games). =)

The fact that none of the consumer protection agencies are even remotely interested in this stuff is insane

After 10 years without update or end of sales, any game should be considered as an abandondware and its source code available as long it is for no comercial use, unless the dev/publisher/ip owner decides to sell it again or make a new game version through a remake. This should be possible through a fair use rule.
