Circumstances of Creation: The nucleus of the Greek Legion was provided by three independent companies of Greeks based at Cairo,Damietta and rosetta that had been formed in 1798 to provide security for French shipping on the Nile.After Napoleon's flight from Egypt, General Kleber decided to use those existing units as a means to expandthe military use of Egyptians of Greek origin.
