The GOI of the XXI century plays a primary role in the panorama of Italian Armed Forces For decades, the GOI is constantly called in every situation of crisis to carry out the most delicate tasks and solving of obvious strategic importance, to respond decisively to urgent operational issues and with dangerous political implications. Starting from the war years with underwater operations against enemy shipping, going to the years of lead in the fight against domestic and international terrorism, the hijacking of the Achille Lauro in recent years the tasks entrusted to the GOI have undergone a further evolution that have placed as a national center of gravity in fact expanding its operational horizons and implementing the global projection capability. From 11 September to now the GOI has been engaged in an increasingly predominant also in the major terrestrial operational theaters, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, and the contrast with phenomena such as piracy in the Indian Ocean or the monitoring of the developments of regional crises such as the Arab spring. Of note, above all, the Military Assistance activities in favor of the security forces in other countries through training activities and intelligence
