Hrot is not as polished as other modern boomer shooters like Dusk, Ion Fury or Amid Evil. Enemy AI is pretty bad and the weapons and gunplay are serviceable but bland.

However, it manages to make up for these shortcomings: Firstly, the way it fuses drab east bloc architecture with Quake aesthetics is nothing short of genius and results in something that has an incredible sense of place.

Secondly, for all the mechanical jank, the level design is actually really strong. There's a pretty useful ingame map, but I rarely feel like I need it, because the levels are built so logically (with all the shortcuts and loops you'd expect from a game like this) that you just kinda find your way around regardless. Which is pretty impressive for a game that mostly consists of brown textures.
