I tried. I really did. But eventually, my patience ran out.

I first had the chance to play a demo of this game back when Future Gamer Magazine (a publication in my country) still existed. They used to include DVDs packed with game demos, and this game was one of them.

Back then, I only had a potato of a PC—a Pentium 4 build. Playing this game was choppy as hell. Still, I vividly remember how spectacular the physics were: objects flying everywhere when things exploded, and the shield power was pretty fun too. But as time went by, the game slipped from my memory.

Fast forward a couple of months ago—I saw a YouTube clip that sparked something in my brain. After some research, I rediscovered the name of the game, which brought me back to it. And here we are: me ranting about this game.

I won’t dive into the story, because it’s simply this: “Nazis are at it again!” You’ve been killed, resurrected through occult magic, and now you have supernatural abilities. Add a silly plot about a resurrected soldier following orders, and that’s the gist. The story is just about killing Nazis—nothing more, nothing less.

What’s interesting about this game, however, is its abilities and gameplay mechanics.
Gameplay Highlights:

Abilities:
As far as I’ve played, your character has one single ability: a shield.
Press the Q button, and a shield dome will appear.
The shield blocks small projectiles (though not big ones). Amusingly, if you walk around with the shield active, enemies that come into contact with suspended projectiles will take damage.
If you deactivate the shield, these suspended bullets are repelled back toward where you aim, which is surprisingly entertaining.

Power Gauge:
The shield’s energy can be replenished and upgraded by completing a combo of three headshots or melee kills.

Weapons and Gunplay:
The weapons are fine, but this game has some of the jankiest handling of ammunition and gunplay I’ve ever experienced.
When you walk past a dropped gun, you automatically collect its ammo—regardless of the weapon you’re currently holding.
You’re limited to one slot for each weapon type: sidearm, rifle, automatic weapon, heavy weapon, and grenades. To use ammo you’ve collected, you need to manually locate and pick up the corresponding gun.

Overall, the gameplay isn’t terrible, but the enemy AI is absurdly accurate. They can shoot with pinpoint precision, meaning you’ll always take damage unless you’re in complete cover or using your shield power. And as far as I’ve seen, there aren’t any abilities beyond the shield.

The voice acting? A total joke. But honestly, that’s easy to overlook since the plot isn’t worth caring about.
Final Verdict:

This game feels like a passion project from a talented but inexperienced European programmer—something common in the early 2000s. There are technically impressive features, like the abundance of physics objects (which you’ll constantly trip over) and water reflections. But in terms of gameplay, it’s either a nostalgic trip for those who played it back in the day or something you’d probably want to skip.

That’s my final word.

UberSoldier is a bad first person shooter. While also being enjoyable. What I mean is that the game does not feel good. And it is held together by duct tape and the holy spirit. Expect crashes, not working settings, having to hex edit some files to even get the game to boot etc. It is honestly a hassle and a half. BUT! The story and voice acting are worth experiencing. The story was written by a drunken 13 year old and voice acting is like robots trying to learn how to talk like humans and saying every sentence in the most awkward way possible. Except the voice actors were real and hopelessly talentless. Most people could not be this funny if they tried intentionally. It is fascinating that there were a group of people that thought a game like this was ready for release. At least the shooting is somewhat functional and the game never becomes too frustrating. Unlike many other janky games.

Put the game on easy mode, drink 13 beers and have a good time while mindlessly shooting some nazis and laughing at someone else's incompetence. Just don't except anything beyond accidental hilarity. And maybe get the game at a sale. 3/5
