tl;dr Resident Evil + Splinter Cell + Doom 3 + Amnesia

I died 69 times man. SIXTY-NINE times on first play-through. It's because of unexpected gameplay transitions. If the player is made aware, then fine. Otherwise it's just a poor form of game development. Imagine this; you end up wasting bullets only to find out we've transitioned to infinitely spawning enemies. Or maybe you need to run away from some Kayako or Leatherface or Desmond Miles because they just won't die. And then you meet all of them eventually in what DOESN'T look like a final battle! What do you do? Should you waste your bullets? Having said that, Chapter 7: The Keeper (room with safe heads) was like a movie nightmare come to life! It was awesomely done!

I really like id Tech engine games. They always surprise me. From inspiring devs to make games like Dyad, Quadrilateral Cowboy and Prey (2006). To the AAA Bethesda titles we've all heard of like Rage, Wolfenstein and Indiana Jones. The Evil Within doesn't disappoint! In fact it ramps up the dynamic level unfolding, warping, merging and special effects remeniscent of Prey (2006) some time from Chapter 9 onwards. But if there's one thing I hate that the engine does well, it's this...

Adding to the pressure there's lots of non-intuitive gameplay segments that make you think the game is bugged, when it's not (or maybe it is?). For example, you have The Grudge thing chasing you in Chapter 5. You have to incinerate the thing twice, but it still kept on chasing me. It chased me around for 10 mins which felt like an eternity with horrible horror music playing in the background whilst I was looking around for clues, what did I miss? I decided to go back to the incinerator chute and make a final stance with my shotgun. Thinking, well if I die, I'm just going to have to stop playing and make myself a tomato, cheese and ham sandwich and drink some Mountain Dew. I shot The Grudge in the head and that's all it took to "finish her off". At that moment I was like WTF? And proceeded to make myself a sandwich anyways.

It's a miracle I didn't end up looking at any walkthroughs on YouTube. I never do. Only if I think a game is truly bugged, which is like maybe thrice in my lifetime. But you still need to have a fair bit of aptitude to play The Evil Within. So if a bit of puzzle solving abilities during an intense situation isn't your cup of tea, stay clear of The Evil Within.

Back when Prey (2006) came out, a lot of people would have looked at how the levels were tiling away and new parts flying back in. It was really impressive back then. But even 8 years later, despite other games like Metro implementing similar visuals... I gotta say, even playing this very late in 2025, these special effects never fails to amaze me. I mean heck, even The Veil from Wolfenstein (2009) was really amazing for its time.

I know this isn't much of a review, more like ramblings. But that can only be achieved with a game that is thought provoking and not brain dead (forgive the bad pun) generic like a lot of Unreal Engine shovelware. For example, I thought much about how the devs have showcased different gameplay styles. They've shown that you can already make something like Deadly Premonition (2010), the Splinter Cell series, Sniper Elite Zombie Army series and Warhammer Vermintide 2 (2018). You could even potentially make Control (2019).

Then it got me thinking. I know it's not 2014, but I have 32GB of RAM now (not even considered a lot these days). Back in 2013 Sniper Elite showcased a clever way to not really have any level loading. I believe video games these days, should never have any kind of level loading except for when you start up the game. It should just be one experience. I digress. But you see that's the kind of thinking that goes on in my mind as I'm playing a game like this. It could have been done. I dunno, maybe this is just a coping mechanism from being frightened.

At the end of the last chapter, I had accumulated 63000 green brain enhancement jelly jars that I never got to use and it wasn't needed either. Upon completion I gained another 50000 (20000 is a lot for context). It's enticing for replayability, but I've never believed in rewarding the player to urge them to continue playing on. I believe more in focusing on designing a great coherent game to begin with and then let the player decide whether they want to come back for more even without incentives. But that's just me.

The Assignment and The Consequence DLC's which came together with the game was more of a Hard Target (1993) or Surviving the Game (1994) movie scenario. It focused on Kidman's side of the story with a focus on being helpless and needing to running away or being careful with tactical takedowns. It was a very interesting take that gets you to kind of relive through the entire campaign in a fast-forward flash, whilst filling a lot of the missing gaps in the main plot from another chracter's point of view.

And finally, to my delight was The Executioner DLC. Which was a nice way to finish off the game as the badass safe-head in first-person view!

Unplayable, every time I research and implement a band aid fix a new issue comes up.
