For anyone looking for a puzzle game involving not only attention to details in figuring out a language but also connections to the societies that speak each language, and an in-depth look into the diverse societies in this game without even a single explicit description of each of them, this game is the perfect fit for you.

this is honestly as best as it gets for conlang-based games, which is not to say that this is peak, the game is alright, just complicated enough to get your brain going. i just which there was a lil bit more complexity to the in-game languages.

I LOVED this game. You're decoding glyphs through the provided context and it is very fun to do so. The feeling of getting it right and locking those glyphs down is fantastic. The soundtrack and art direction deserve all the praise they have received! Highly recommend if you enjoy puzzle games!

The puzzles are not too hard, not too easy, keeps you engaged and have satisfying solutions.

The game play is simple and intuitive. The game does a super good job of introducing puzzles little by little to not overwhelm the player. The music, colours and the story drags you in.

The core idea of creating puzzles around the language is awesome and it is implemented in such a unique and original way.

I highly recommend this game!

Adorable, beautiful, and most of all, as a linguistics student, this makes my brain happy

A clever, artsy, and optimistic game that was exactly the dose of soul-food I needed. If you enjoyed games like The Talos Principle or Myst then Chants of Sennaar is an easy recommendation. The use of language as a puzzle was uniquely satisfying. Experiencing epiphanies of translation never got old and it was great to feel each new zone unfold as my vocabulary expanded. In fact sometimes I found myself wishing the fake languages used were more fleshed out and transcribing them just a little less railroaded and hand-holding. But the game stayed around long enough to deliver the message it needed to.

I guess if Chants' ~9 hour runtime leaves you hungry for more you can always learn a new language IRL. As someone who has been doing that for several years now I will sorely miss Chants' context-rich learning environment and mesmerizing atmosphere.

it's a beautiful game and there's nothing else like it! If you're looking for a one of a kind puzzle adventure game, this should be on your list. It's funny, challenging, beautiful, and meaningful. I'm savoring it as slowly as possible. only 5 hours and its one of my top games.

Chants of Sennaar is a somewhat challenging puzzle adventure game with very little hand-holding. There's much joy to be had in exploration, experimentation, and figuring things out for yourself. Most prominently, you must decipher foreign languages, specifically their orthography, grammar, and even meanings in translation. That might sound like a poor fit for a video game, but the mechanics for it are sensible and comprehensible.

The story is unveiled in layers (literally!) and is enticing from beginning to end. Every veneer you peel off reveals something new, interesting, and often delightful.

The presentation is simple but beautiful, comprising expressive animations, alluring color palettes, and wonderful music pieces.

If I have to complain about something, it's the controller interface. It can be a bit tedious to sort through the many orthographic symbols. Also, picking directions and objects can be finicky. I have a feeling that most playtesting was done with mouse and keyboard. But this blemish did not affect my pleasure, and I should emphasize that it's absolutely playable with a controller, even if it's not always ideal.

What a lovingly crafted and satisfying game! Chants of Sennaar is an instant classic and a must-play for fans of puzzle adventure games.
