I've played multiple backrooms and liminal space games and this IMO is the best one. The movement and the look and feel of the game is well done. Even though I've already seen playthroughs of people playing it on YouTubbe, I still managed to get stuck on the first level because I couldn't find the elevator... I basically befriended whatever that was down there with me because I was lost for so long.

I feel like any game where I pause to stand still and enjoy the atmosphere is a success in this specific walking sim genre. The environmental design is certainly the biggest strenght of The Backrooms: Lost Tape. I caught myself admiring the dream like levels very regularly while playing this game. Combining this with a soundtrack by the very talented Zerofuturism, you got a tranquil experience on your hand which can be cherished by fans of the general aesthetic.

On the flipside however, the attempt at a story connected to the SCP Verse feels forced at best, I would have preferred it if the developers went for an experience as a whole instead of a story throughout the levels. Many minor fallacies are committed along the way. Notes in some levels hinting at the presence of other "survivors" just to be forgotten or discontinued in later levels, as well as generally inconsistent storytelling.

Upcomming tapes should consider ditching the current story attempt of a survivor trying to find other survivors and maybe instead focus on the role of the backrooms as a pocket dimension and the abnomalies that would ensue such a role.
