I rarely write reviews for games. In many ways I feel unqualified to talk about a game experience, especially when there are so many professional game reviewers who critique the media for a living. That said, I couldn't help but feel compelled to write some things about Farewell North.

Before release, I saw a preview for Farewell North and thought that sounds right up my alley. My partner and my beloved border ♥♥♥♥♥♥ passed away earlier in the year so playing one to experience the joy of herding, tracking, and running as fast as their legs can possibly take them sounded like just the thing I needed. Hoo boy did I have no idea what I was in for.

The beautiful way which the story guides you gently along, discovering memories as the islands reveal themselves bit by bit is so genuinely heartfelt. I very rarely felt like I was just playing a game, but unraveling a story. And I think that's where Farewell North truly transcends beyond most games. Exploring grief, joy, curiosity and overcoming hardship are themes that are so difficult to nail down in a game in ways that are so deeply relatable as this has. It felt like this game was made for me, personally - and I don't think I've ever cried with a controller in my hands before... until now.

Do yourself a favor and play Farewell North. Then when you're done, hug those you care about and enjoy making memories together.
