A 3rd person shooter game where you can command up to 12 NPCs in different missions.

The only outdated aspect of the game is switching weapons but you will get used to it after a while.

Story is about liberating New York from Soviets.

Fantastic great old game. I missed playing this back in the day.

The game is fun, but has it's shortcomings that I'd forgotten about.

The gameplay overall has really solid ideas. The gunplay is solid enough, though many of the guns feel very samey mainly due to enemy tankiness and weapon spread. For reference I ended up with a glitch (I think) that gave the starting pistol like 4000 ammo in reserve, and it just felt better than many of the other guns in the game. I thinks it because it's one of the few guns that's more accurate at a distance. The squad dynamics are fun, but it's more like controlling a swarm of bees in that when they are behind you, they don't do too much, but if you have enough of them they are your primary weapon that you can send forward to clear out most enemies. I do really like the tactical aspect of the game in that you travel to different locations to take out strategic resources, such as helipads, which in turn, makes other maps easier. I feel this probably the single best aspect of the game, though I wish it had a bit more impact. Taking out a helipad feels almost mandatory which is good, but some of the other side objects basically just give you xp or knockout only a reinforcement spawner that is not really much of a threat. Still cool. Some of the level designs though are veeery annoying, most specifically one of the last levels where you have to run into 2 machine gun nest with next to no cover and nothing else for the machine guns to shoot.

The story is not as cool as I remember it. It's very cool in concept, a world where the USSR developed the A-bomb first, won WWII, invades South America, and now is invading the USA. The villains are cartoonishly evil Russian man (x2), though it is wonderful to hear Nicholas Worth from Red Alert 2 playing evil Russian man again. The story has some moments that are cool, but overall feels more comic book than dramatic.

Overall, though, I did enjoy replaying this game. Nostalgia was a factors, so newcomers might find it a bit less satisfying. I do feel like this game/series would be good for a remake/remastering. Keep the setting and the squad/tactical elements, and then either lean more towards dramatic realism or do what wolfenstien did and embrase the over-the-top.
